Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) is a root vegetable of the Amaranthaceae family, cultivated worldwide as a food crop and, over the last fifteen years, adopted at scale as a functional ingredient in sports and cardiovascular nutrition. Unlike most of the botanicals in our range, it arrives with no Ayurvedic pedigree and no traditional-use framing — it is a food, and its ingredient status rests on a modern and reasonably well-documented mechanism.
That mechanism is dietary nitrate. Nitrate from beetroot is reduced in the body to nitrite and then to nitric oxide, and the sports-performance literature that made beetroot a category — overwhelmingly built on beetroot juice — is measuring nitrate dose. It is not measuring colour.
Which is where the commercial problem begins. Beetroot ingredients are conventionally standardised on betalains — betanin and vulgaxanthin, the pigments that make beetroot red. Betalain content is a perfectly good specification if you are buying a natural colour. As a proxy for the functional fraction it is close to meaningless: a vividly red beetroot powder can carry very little nitrate, because pigment and nitrate are unrelated constituents that vary independently with cultivar, soil nitrogen, season and processing route.
So we do something straightforward: we declare dietary nitrate content per batch, by ion chromatography or HPLC, alongside the betalain assay. And we quote root powder, juice powder and standardised extract as three distinct products rather than three grades of one, because they differ enormously in nitrate content, in price, and in what they can honestly be used for.
Two independent fractions, commonly conflated
The constituent the sports and cardiovascular literature is built on, reduced in the body toward nitric oxide. Highly variable with cultivar, soil nitrogen, fertiliser regime and season — which is exactly why it needs declaring per batch rather than assuming.

Beet root is a sugar crop — sucrose dominates the dry matter of root and juice powders, which is why inclusion rates and carbohydrate declarations matter in formulation.

Why formulators specify a nitrate-declared beetroot
The constituent the performance literature actually measures, reported by ion chromatography or HPLC on every batch rather than left to be inferred from colour.
Reported as well, because betalains genuinely matter where beetroot is doing colour work or where a customer's existing specification is written on them.
Root powder, juice powder and standardised extract differ by an order of magnitude in nitrate and in price. We price and label them as different products.
Maltodextrin and other carriers are legitimate in spray-dried juice powders and are declared with the inclusion level, not hidden inside a low assay.

Beet is a cultivated food crop with a broad, renewable supply base, so there is no wild-collection or conservation dimension to manage.

These are different products, not interchangeable grades, and the distinction is where most beetroot mispricing and most disappointed formulations originate. Juice powder is made by concentrating and drying the juice and typically carries the highest nitrate; root powder is the dried vegetable milled, with nitrate at native levels and a fraction of the concentration; a betalain-standardised extract is optimised for pigment and may carry substantially less nitrate than a juice powder despite costing more. Because nitrate varies with cultivar, soil nitrogen, season and processing, we declare it per batch on all forms rather than publishing a fixed figure. *The product is of vegetable origin; colour varies with cultivar, season and processing. Note that dietary nitrate is declared per batch rather than specified as a minimum, and that is a deliberate choice we would rather explain than disguise. Nitrate content in beet is genuinely variable — it moves with cultivar, soil nitrogen, fertiliser regime, growing season and processing route — so a supplier publishing a fixed guaranteed nitrate figure across all batches is either narrowing their raw material dramatically or reporting something other than what they measured. We measure it and tell you the number for the batch you are buying. If your formulation needs a nitrate floor, tell us and we will quote against it as a screened specification with the corresponding lead time and price, rather than pretend it is standard. Betalain content is not a proxy for nitrate: the two vary independently, and a deeper red powder is not therefore a higher-nitrate one. Where a carrier is used in spray drying, it is named with its inclusion level. A current Certificate of Analysis and MSDS are issued with every batch.
From beet crop to declared powder — measured, not inferred
Raw Material & Selection: Beetroot is a cultivated food crop, so the sourcing questions here are agronomic rather than botanical — there is no wild-collection risk and no meaningful species-substitution problem. What matters instead is cultivar and growing conditions, because these drive nitrate content, and agrochemical history, because a food crop grown for a supplement market still has to meet the destination's pesticide limits. Both are recorded, and cultivation status is declared per batch.
Manufacturing & Testing: Beetroot juice powder, extract and root powder are produced at certified facilities in India. Each batch runs a full QC battery — identity by TLC, dietary nitrate by ion chromatography or HPLC, betalains by UV with betanin by HPLC, sugars, loss on drying, pH, bulk density, ash, mesh, heavy metals by ICP-MS, pesticide residue screening and a complete USP microbiological panel — before release. Beetroot occupies an unusual regulatory position that formulators should understand rather than discover. The same constituent that makes beetroot commercially interesting — nitrate — is regulated as a contaminant in other food contexts, with maximum levels set in the EU for certain leafy vegetables, and nitrate and nitrite intake is a subject of established toxicological attention. This does not make beetroot problematic: it is a widely consumed food, and the sports literature uses it precisely because dietary nitrate from vegetables behaves as it does. But it does mean that a high-nitrate positioning is not a purely upside marketing story, that claim language needs care, and that formulators targeting high daily nitrate intakes should include the question in their safety review rather than treating nitrate as an unqualified good. We would rather state this plainly than let a buyer meet it later.
Beetroot is a food, which simplifies some things and complicates others. There is no novel food question for conventional beetroot preparations and no traditional-use framework to lean on either — the ingredient's story is modern and mechanistic. Performance and cardiovascular claims are subject to each market's rules and are generally tightly controlled; in the EU, cardiovascular and performance claims for such ingredients are not readily available. Positioning that describes the ingredient and the format, rather than asserting a physiological outcome, travels considerably further. The specific position belongs in your regulatory review.
