The part used is not the showy petal but the fleshy calyx — the sepal cup that swells around the seed pod after flowering — and the species matters as much as the part: the ornamental garden hibiscus, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, is a different plant with a different chemistry, and it is not the trade material.
