What is Grape Seed Extract?

The most method-sensitive assay in the botanical trade — and how we handle it

Grape seed (Vitis vinifera L.) extract is one of the most widely used antioxidant actives in the world, made from a by-product of the wine and juice industries. The seed is unusually rich in proanthocyanidins — condensed tannins built from catechin and epicatechin units — and concentrated extracts deliver that polyphenol load at a controlled specification rather than as a variable agricultural material.

Buying grape seed extract well requires understanding one thing above all others: the number on the certificate depends heavily on how it was measured. Proanthocyanidins are not a single compound but a polymeric series, and at least four assay methods are in common commercial use — DMAC, the Porter (butanol-HCl) method, vanillin, and various total-polyphenol methods such as Folin-Ciocalteu. They measure related but different things, and they return materially different numbers on the same sample.

That is why "95% OPC" from two suppliers can describe two quite different materials, and why some quotations that look competitive are simply using a method that reads high.
