An Agricultural Ingredient, Not a Botanical One

Beetroot sits apart from most of our range. It is a cultivated food crop with no wild-collection dimension, no conservation constraint, no look-alike species and no traditional-medicine framework. Nobody is going to send you the wrong plant.

What that means practically is that the sourcing risks move from identity to agronomy. The questions worth asking a beetroot supplier are the ones you would ask a vegetable grower.

Where Nitrate Comes From

Nitrate in beet is taken up from the soil. So its content is, first and foremost, a function of how the crop was grown:

This is why nitrate is declared per batch rather than guaranteed. The figure is an agronomic outcome. A supplier promising an identical nitrate number across every batch, year-round, is either selecting raw material very tightly — which is possible, and costs money — or is not really measuring it each time.

The Organic Tension

Worth understanding before you specify both organic certification and a high nitrate floor.

Nitrate accumulation is driven substantially by available soil nitrogen, and conventional nitrogen fertilisation raises it. Organic production systems typically supply nitrogen differently and often more slowly.

The practical implication is simply that these two requirements do not automatically travel together, and a specification demanding certified organic material and a high guaranteed nitrate figure may be a harder brief than it looks. It is not impossible — it is a screening and selection question, with a cost. We would rather discuss that openly at quotation than have it surface as a supply problem later. Growing and Season in India

Beet is grown widely across India as a cool-season crop, with the main harvest concentrated in the winter months and material available through the year from staggered production and storage.

The processing route matters as much as the field:

That last line explains a good deal of otherwise puzzling variation between suppliers of nominally similar products. Nitrate is highly water-soluble, so any aqueous step that discards liquid can carry it away. A process optimised for pigment clarity is not necessarily one that preserves nitrate.

Screened Nitrate Specifications

If your formulation is dosed to deliver a specific nitrate load, batch-to-batch declaration is not enough — you need a floor.

We quote that as a screened specification: material tested and selected to meet a stated nitrate minimum. Being straightforward about what that involves:

Agrochemical History

Beet is a conventionally farmed field crop, so pesticide residue is a live consideration for EU-bound material rather than a formality. Cultivated supply has the advantage that spray history is knowable — we record it, and screen to EU MRL where the destination requires it.

Heavy metals deserve attention too: root crops take up what is in the soil, so ICP-MS testing is doing real work on beetroot rather than confirming an expected absence.
