What is Ginger Extract?

A standardised pungent-principle active from the world's most traded spice rhizome

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is among the oldest and most widely traded botanicals on earth, used in Ayurveda as mahaushadha — "the great medicine" — and in kitchens and pharmacopoeias from China to Northern Europe. The underground stem, correctly a rhizome though universally traded as "ginger root", carries the pungent phenolic ketones that give ginger both its heat and its functional identity. A concentrated, standardised extract lets a formulator deliver those actives at a controlled dose instead of relying on variable dried powder.

The defining constituents are the gingerols — principally 6-gingerol, with 8- and 10-gingerol alongside — and their dehydration products, the shogaols, which form as the rhizome is dried or heated and are markedly more pungent. SV Botanica standardises this extract to total gingerols of not less than 5% by HPLC, so every batch is defined by its actual pungent-principle load rather than by extract ratio or colour. A 10% gingerol grade, native-ratio full-spectrum grades and a cold-water-soluble spray-dried grade are also available.

The extract is finished as a free-flowing powder, light yellow to tan, with a characteristic pungent aroma. The gingerol-to-shogaol ratio is a genuine processing variable — low-temperature extraction preserves gingerols, while heat drives conversion to shogaols — so buyers who care about the profile, not just the total, should specify it. We supply against buyer specification and will confirm the profile on the batch CoA.

We supply supplement brands, functional-food and beverage manufacturers, sports-nutrition formulators and Ayurvedic houses, with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis on every shipment.

Active Constituents

The pungent phenolics that define the ginger rhizome

6-Gingerol

The principal pungent phenolic of fresh ginger and the dominant contributor to the total gingerol assay. Standardised here by HPLC.

8- & 10-Gingerol

Longer-chain homologues that co-occur with 6-gingerol and are summed into the total gingerols figure on the CoA.

6-Shogaol

The dehydration product of 6-gingerol, formed on drying and heating. Substantially more pungent, and a marker of processing history.

Zingerone

A vanillyl ketone formed when gingerols degrade further under heat; contributes the sweeter, less sharp facet of cooked ginger.

Zingiberene & Volatile Oil

The sesquiterpene-rich essential-oil fraction that carries ginger's characteristic aroma and defines the oleoresin grade.

Diarylheptanoids

Curcuminoid-adjacent compounds of the Zingiberaceae family that round out the rhizome's full-spectrum phenolic profile.

Key Actives & Functional Properties

Why formulators specify a gingerol-standardised extract — the functional role of the markers

Standardised Total Gingerols

Gingerols are the pungent principles that define ginger's functional identity. A declared total-gingerol percentage by HPLC lets formulators build digestive-comfort and daily-wellness products on a consistent, verifiable active load rather than a vague extract ratio.

Digestive & Anti-Nausea Positioning

Ginger is the single most recognised botanical for digestive comfort and travel- and motion-related nausea, giving brands a label-friendly hero ingredient that needs no consumer education.

Gingerol-to-Shogaol Profile Control

Because shogaols form from gingerols under heat, the ratio between them is a direct readout of processing. Low-temperature extraction preserves the gingerol-dominant profile most buyers specify — and we will state the profile on the CoA.

Joint-Comfort & Recovery Formats

Ginger is routinely paired with turmeric and boswellia in mobility and post-exercise recovery stacks, where a standardised pungent-principle load matters for dose consistency across batches.

Solubility Options

A cold-water-soluble spray-dried grade suits shots, teas and RTD beverages, while the standard gingerol grade and the oleoresin suit capsules, tablets, gummies and seasoning systems.

Formulation Consistency

A free-flowing powder passing ≥95% through a 40-mesh sieve with controlled bulk density disperses and blends predictably, and the declared pungency lets you hold a stable sensory profile batch to batch.

These are functional and physico-chemical properties of the actives; SV Botanica does not make medical or therapeutic claims for this ingredient.

Grade & Standardisation

The core specification for the flagship 5% total gingerols grade, plus ratio, oleoresin and water-soluble options

Grade Standardisation Form Best For Solubility
Ginger Extract 5% Standard Total gingerols NLT 5% (HPLC) Light yellow to tan fine powder, ≥95% through 40 mesh Digestive & anti-nausea supplements, joint-comfort blends, capsules & tablets Partially water-soluble
Ginger Extract 10% High-potency Total gingerols NLT 10% (HPLC) Tan to light brown fine powder Low-dose formats, softgels, concentrated recovery stacks Partially water-soluble
Ginger Extract Ratio Full-spectrum Native 4:1 / 10:1 ratio (full-spectrum) Light yellow to tan fine powder Traditional & Ayurvedic formats, herbal blends Grade-dependent
Ginger Oleoresin Oleoresin Pungency and volatile-oil declared per batch Viscous dark brown liquid Seasoning systems, beverages, flavour applications Oil-dispersible
Ginger Extract WS Water-soluble Cold-water-soluble spray-dried grade Light tan free-flowing powder Wellness shots, RTD beverages, teas & drink mixes Cold-water-soluble

The 5% total gingerols grade is our CoA-backed flagship, standardised by HPLC with identity confirmed by TLC. Alternative standardisations, native-ratio (full-spectrum) extracts, oleoresin, cold-water-soluble grades, custom mesh and packaging can be quoted against buyer specification and order volume. Every batch is released against a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis.

Quality Assurance & Sourcing

From rhizome to standardised extract — authenticated, tested, documented

Raw Material & Authentication: The extract is prepared from cultivated Zingiber officinale rhizome. Because ginger extract is one of the more frequently diluted botanicals — spent rhizome, exhausted marc and undeclared maltodextrin are all routes — gingerol identity is confirmed by TLC and total gingerols are assayed by HPLC on every batch before it is accepted.

Manufacturing & Testing: Ginger Dry Extract is manufactured at certified facilities in India. Each batch runs through a full QC battery — total gingerols by HPLC, loss on drying, pH, bulk density, ash and acid-insoluble ash, mesh, residual solvent by GC, heavy metals by ICP-MS, aflatoxins, pesticide residue screening, and a complete USP microbiological panel — before release.

Documentation: Every shipment is supplied against a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis with an MSDS. Halal, Kosher and Organic certification are available. Country of Origin and export documentation are provided on request. Because dried spice-derived materials are a recognised ethylene-oxide risk category, we supply a non-ETO declaration and can add LC-MS/MS testing — see our guides on EU pesticide MRL compliance and EU import requirements for botanical extracts.
