Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is among the oldest cultivated spices on record, traded across the Mediterranean, the Middle East and India for millennia and established in Ayurveda as dhanyaka — a cooling digestive that anchors the classical coriander–cumin–fennel trio. The plant yields two entirely different ingredients: the leaf (cilantro), whose aroma comes from aliphatic aldehydes, and the seed — botanically a schizocarp fruit — whose warm, citrus-floral character comes from a monoterpene volatile fraction dominated by linalool. This extract is prepared exclusively from the seed.

Linalool typically makes up 60–80% of coriander seed volatile oil, which makes it the natural standardisation basis for a serious commercial extract.
