A label claiming "500 mg hibiscus extract" is a statement about powder. A label claiming "500 mg hibiscus extract standardised to 10% anthocyanins, providing 50 mg total anthocyanins" is a statement about delivered actives — and it is the version that survives a change of grade or supplier. Fix the target in milligrams of anthocyanins per serving, then back-calculate the extract weight from the batch CoA, building overage against the low end of the specification.
Positioning note: hibiscus sits in the clinically studied cardiovascular-wellness category, and that category language — not efficacy claims — is the correct frame for label and marketing copy. A supplier CoA substantiates the ingredient identity and dose; claims substantiation is a separate, buyer-side exercise under the regulations of each market.

- Effervescents and sticks: natural fits — the acid fraction complements effervescent systems, the full water solubility gives a clean, sediment-free glass, and the colour develops on dissolution as a built-in sensory cue. Control RH during compression and filling; hygroscopicity is the constraint again.
The Stability Points That Catch Formulators
Anthocyanins are less forgiving than most botanical markers, and three interactions do most of the damage:
- Heat, cumulatively. Every thermal event — spray drying, hot-fill, depositing, warehouse summer — takes its percentage. Losses compound; budget them as a chain, not as one number.
- Vitamin C, paradoxically. Ascorbic acid and anthocyanins degrade each other through a mutual mechanism. A hibiscus-plus-C shot is a legitimate product, but it needs its own real-time shelf-life study, and colour fade will usually be the first visible symptom.
- Metal ions and pH drift. Iron and aluminium shift the shade toward blue-grey; a pH creep above ~4 in a reformulation quietly kills the red. Water quality, equipment contact and buffer choices all show up in the glass.
