Why Hibiscus Is a Target

Botanical adulteration follows economics. It appears where the visible quality cue is cheap to fake, the buyer's specification is thin, and the genuine article carries real cost. Hibiscus checks every box: the visible cue is redness, which a synthetic dye delivers for pennies; many specifications say only "anthocyanins 10%" with no method or profile; and genuine anthocyanin content is the expensive part of the material.

The result is rarely a wholly fake product. It is a real hibiscus extract that has been stretched, tinted, or quietly sourced from the wrong plant.

Route 1 — Synthetic Dye Spiking

The signature fraud of red botanicals. Azo dyes — amaranth, Allura Red, carmoisine, Ponceau 4R — are intensely red, water-soluble, stable and cheap. A small addition lifts both the visual impression and, depending on the buyer's assay, the apparent pigment reading. On a crude single-wavelength UV method, dye absorbance reads as "anthocyanins".

What catches it: a targeted synthetic-colour screen by HPLC or TLC, which resolves the dyes from genuine anthocyanins outright — plus the pH-differential assay itself, which is far harder to fool than single-wavelength UV because azo dyes do not show the anthocyanins' characteristic pH-dependent absorbance shift. This screen should be a standing line on the CoA, stated as absent, not an on-request extra.

Route 2 — Cheaper Anthocyanin Sources

The sophisticated version of route 1: boost the assay with pigments that are genuinely anthocyanins, just not roselle's. Black carrot, grape skin and purple corn concentrates are traded at scale for the colour industry and can be blended into hibiscus extract to hit a total-anthocyanin number honestly measured but dishonestly sourced.

What catches it: the HPLC sambubioside fingerprint. Roselle carries delphinidin- and cyanidin-3-sambubioside in a characteristic proportion; black carrot and grape skin show acylated glucosides on entirely different retention patterns. A blended material shows extra peaks no natural roselle produces. This is the single most valuable test on a hibiscus CoA, and the practical reason to insist on the profile rather than only the total.

Specification language that works: "Total anthocyanins NLT 10.0% w/w by UV-Vis pH differential, as cyanidin-3-glucoside equivalents. Anthocyanin profile by HPLC to show delphinidin-3-sambubioside and cyanidin-3-sambubioside consistent with Hibiscus sabdariffa; synthetic colours absent by HPLC/TLC. Carriers and excipients, if any, declared by name and percentage." Four sentences, and every route in this article now requires falsifying a document rather than exploiting an omission.

Route 3 — Species and Part Substitution

Three confusable materials circulate. True roselle calyx is the trade article. Ornamental Hibiscus rosa-sinensis flower is abundant and cheap, and because it has a legitimate traditional role in hair care it moves through the same supply chains. Kenaf (H. cannabinus) calyx is a fibre-crop by-product. Milled and dried, all three are reddish powders; only one is what your specification means.

What catches it: TLC identity against delphinidin-3-sambubioside, backed by the HPLC profile — the substitutes lack the sambubioside pair. The organic-acid signature helps too: genuine calyx extract is strongly acidic in solution (pH 2.5–3.8 at 1%) from its hibiscus and hydroxycitric acid load, and substitute materials generally are not. A near-neutral "hibiscus extract" deserves questions.

Route 4 — Spent Calyx and Post-Infusion Material

Hibiscus is brewed at industrial scale for tea and beverage concentrate, and the spent calyx that leaves those processes still looks like hibiscus — but its water-soluble pigments and acids are gone, because that is what the brewing extracted. Dried, milled and blended into good material, it dilutes the actives proportionally.

What catches it: the assay itself, on a dry basis — the pigment simply is not there — plus the pH line again, since exhausted material has lost its acid fraction. Ash limits catch the mineral-heavy residue of aggressive re-processing.

Route 5 — Undeclared Carriers

Maltodextrin is legitimate when declared — spray-drying an extract this hygroscopic can genuinely require a carrier. The adulteration is the undeclared version, sold as pure extract with the weight made up. Tell-tales: an oddly pale shade for the claimed assay, low bulk density, and a sweetish taste behind the tartness.

What catches it: a required carrier-declaration line on the CoA, dry-basis assay, and total ash / acid-insoluble ash limits for the mineral variants.

Practical Steps for a Buyer

  1. Never accept colour as evidence of anything. It is the cheapest attribute to fake.
  2. Specify the pH-differential method and require the HPLC profile. Together they close the two spiking routes.
  3. Make the synthetic-colour screen a standing CoA line. Asking only when suspicious means asking too late.
  4. Require species, part and carrier declarations in writing. Converts omissions into falsifications.
  5. Third-party verify the first batch. Nominate Eurofins, SGS or Intertek for pre-shipment testing on a new supplier, and re-qualify periodically — supply chains drift.
