One product, two specifications, and the difference costs money
Turmeric oleoresin is the solvent-extracted concentrate of Curcuma longa rhizome — the whole extractable fraction of the spice, carrying both the curcuminoid pigments that give turmeric its colour and the volatile oil (principally turmerones) that gives it aroma. India produces the large majority of the world's turmeric and is the origin of record for this material.
The commercial confusion on this ingredient is worth resolving before you request a quotation, because two different buyers ask for the same words and mean different things. A food colour buyer wants colour strength — how much yellow it delivers per kilo in the application. A nutraceutical buyer wants total curcuminoids by HPLC, because that is what their finished-product dose is built on.
Those two are related but they do not track each other reliably. Colour value is affected by the whole pigment fraction and by how it behaves in the matrix; curcuminoid assay is a defined analytical number. A material selected for colour performance is not automatically the strongest on curcuminoid assay, and vice versa. We declare both on every certificate rather than quoting one and letting the buyer assume it covers the other.
Two further declarations matter on any oleoresin and are frequently missing. Volatile oil content is what distinguishes an oleoresin from purified curcumin — it carries the aroma, and a low figure means you are drifting toward a colour extract rather than a spice oleoresin. And residual solvent is the defining QC control for solvent-extracted products: we state the solvent used and test every batch by GC.
What is in turmeric oleoresin
The principal curcuminoid and the compound the nutraceutical market is built on. Reported as part of total curcuminoids by HPLC.

The last row is listed to prevent the most expensive misunderstanding on this ingredient. Curcumin 95% is a purified powder produced by further processing oleoresin — it carries no volatile oil, behaves differently in formulation, and sits at a different price entirely. If you are dosing a supplement on curcuminoid content, that is usually the product you want; if you are colouring or flavouring a food, the oleoresin is. Every grade declares total curcuminoids by HPLC, colour value, volatile oil content and residual solvent, whichever basis the grade is sold on, so the two buyer types can read the same certificate. The first is volatile oil: it is what makes this an oleoresin rather than a colour extract, and a materially low figure indicates the aromatic fraction has been stripped. The second is residual solvent — the defining control on any solvent-extracted product. We name the solvent used and test every batch by GC; a supplier who will not name the solvent cannot be assessed against your market's limits. Note also that total curcuminoids and colour value are different measurements: the first is an HPLC assay of three defined compounds, the second is a performance measure. A material optimised for one is not automatically the best on the other, and quotations should be compared on the basis your application actually uses. Synthetic curcumin adulteration is a documented problem in this trade — screening is available and we recommend it for nutraceutical-grade purchases. Raw Material: Turmeric oleoresin is produced from dried Curcuma longa rhizome sourced from Indian turmeric growing regions. Curcuminoid content in the raw rhizome varies with variety and growing conditions, so incoming material is assayed before extraction rather than assumed — the yield and the achievable grade both depend on it.
Extraction & Testing: Produced at certified facilities in India. Each batch is assayed for total curcuminoids by HPLC, colour value, and volatile oil, with residual solvent tested by GC against the named solvent. Physico-chemical and contaminant testing covers moisture by Karl Fischer, heavy metals by ICP-MS, aflatoxins by HPLC-FLD, pesticide residue screening and a full microbiological panel. Synthetic curcumin screening is available on request and recommended for nutraceutical-grade purchases.

Key information for global product registration and labelling
A distinction worth getting right before labelling. Purified curcumin is a permitted food colour in the EU (E100), with its own specifications; turmeric oleoresin is a spice extract used for colour and flavour. Those are not interchangeable regulatory categories, and which one your finished product declares depends on the material you actually bought and how it is used. In the US, turmeric and turmeric oleoresin are handled under their own colour-additive listings. The practical point: the regulatory identity follows the specification, not the marketing name, so your labelling should be built on the certificate. We state clearly which material is supplied — oleoresin or purified curcumin — and the analytical basis it is sold on.
Every oleoresin is a solvent-extracted product, and residual solvent is therefore its defining quality control rather than an afterthought. Permitted solvents and their maximum residues are set by the destination market's extraction-solvent rules, and the limits differ between solvent classes. We name the solvent used on every certificate and test each batch by GC. Buyers should confirm that the solvent used is permitted for their market and application — a supplier who will not name it has made that assessment impossible.
