Its activity is attributed to silymarin, a complex of flavonolignans concentrated in the seed: silybin (silibinin) A & B, isosilybin A & B, silychristin and silydianin, together with the flavonoid taxifolin.

A note on the assay: UV spectrophotometry measures the whole silymarin complex and reads high (the basis of the 80% figure), while HPLC quantifies the individual flavonolignans and is usually reported as silibinin, which reads lower.
