What is Bhringraj Extract?

Ayurveda's "king of hair," concentrated to a defined wedelolactone profile

BhringrajEclipta prostrata (accepted name; synonym Eclipta alba), of the Asteraceae family — is one of Ayurveda's most valued botanicals, traditionally known as keshraja, the "king of hair," as well as karisalankanni and false daisy. Its activity is associated with a group of coumestans concentrated in the whole plant (aerial parts), led by the marker compound wedelolactone.

SV Botanica supplies Bhringraj Extract standardised to wedelolactone, assayed by HPLC and identity-confirmed by TLC/HPTLC. A native 10:1 full-spectrum whole-plant extract is also available, alongside grades standardised to 1% and 2.5% wedelolactone (higher on request) — so authenticity and potency are never assumed from a single number.

A note on standardisation: wedelolactone occurs at low natural levels, so standardised grades are enriched and the HPLC percentage is the meaningful quality differentiator between suppliers. We publish it per batch.

A note on identity: true bhringraj is Eclipta prostrata. The common "peela bhringraj" substitute (Wedelia / Sphagneticola species) and other look-alikes are guarded against by TLC/HPTLC identity testing — see our Bhringraj Extract Sourcing Guide. We supply hair-care, nutricosmetic, cosmetic and Ayurvedic supplement manufacturers worldwide — start with the quote request form or the full Bhringraj Extract Buyer's Guide.

Active Constituents

Key compounds driving bhringraj's characteristic profile

Wedelolactone

The primary coumestan marker used to standardise bhringraj; a well-studied antioxidant/anti-inflammatory constituent and the compound most bhringraj grades are assayed for by HPLC.

Demethylwedelolactone

A closely related coumestan that co-occurs with wedelolactone and contributes to the extract's characteristic activity profile.

Ecliptasaponins & Eclalbasaponins

Triterpene (oleanane) saponins characteristic of Eclipta, part of the whole-plant matrix.

Flavonoids (Luteolin, Apigenin)

Antioxidant flavonoids present in the aerial parts.

Ecliptalbine & Alkaloids

Nitrogenous constituents traditionally associated with the herb's hepatic and hair uses.

Phytosterols & Thiophenes

Supporting lipophilic constituents naturally present in the plant, including β-amyrin and stigmasterol.

Health Benefits & Research Backing

Traditional use and preclinical (animal / in-vitro) evidence — not proven human clinical or disease-treatment claims

Hair Growth (Traditional & Preclinical)

Bhringraj is the classic Ayurvedic hair botanical; rodent studies of Eclipta prostrata extracts have reported increased hair-follicle counts and faster hair regrowth vs controls, with proposed effects on the hair-growth (anagen) cycle. Human clinical data remain limited.

Scalp & Hair-Oil Tradition

For centuries used in hair oils and scalp preparations; valued in formulations targeting hair fall, greying and scalp health. A staple functional botanical for hair-care brands.

Liver Support (Hepatoprotective, Preclinical)

Wedelolactone and Eclipta extracts have shown hepatoprotective activity in animal models of chemically-induced liver injury; traditionally used as a liver tonic. Preclinical evidence only.

Antioxidant Activity

Coumestans and flavonoids give the extract measurable in-vitro antioxidant (free-radical scavenging) activity.

Anti-inflammatory & Skin Soothing

Traditionally applied topically; preclinical data indicate anti-inflammatory activity relevant to scalp and skin formulations.

Rasayana in Ayurveda

Classified as a rasayana (rejuvenative) herb; appears in classical formulations for hair, skin and liver. Included here as traditional-use context, not a health claim.

Bhringraj pairs naturally with other hair-care and beauty botanicals — see our Amla Extract and Gotu Kola Extract for hair and nutricosmetic blends. For the science behind the marker, read wedelolactone & bhringraj: the research.

Available Grades & Standardisations

Select the right wedelolactone profile for your formulation

Grade Specification Assay Best For Certifications
Native 10:1 Extract Full-Spectrum 10:1 whole-plant; carrier-free or on maltodextrin (spray-dried) TLC / HPTLC Full-matrix hair & Ayurvedic formulations GMP, ISO
Wedelolactone 1% Standard NLT 1% wedelolactone by HPLC HPLC Hair-care & nutricosmetic labels GMP, ISO
Wedelolactone 2.5% High NLT 2.5% wedelolactone by HPLC HPLC High-potency actives & premium hair care GMP, ISO
Cosmetic Grade Topical / INCI Standardised; INCI "Eclipta Prostrata Extract" HPLC Shampoos, hair oils, serums, scalp care GMP, ISO
Custom Grade On Request Defined wedelolactone %, mesh, solvent & carrier HPLC Brand-specific supplement or cosmetic specs Available per batch

Because wedelolactone occurs at low natural levels, standardised grades are enriched and the HPLC percentage is the meaningful quality differentiator between suppliers — higher percentages are produced on request via enrichment. Custom mesh, solvent and carrier options, plus cosmetic-grade (topical/INCI) and supplement-grade material, are available. See wedelolactone standardisation: HPLC vs UV before comparing quotes.

Quality Assurance & Sourcing

From authenticated whole-plant Eclipta to a defined wedelolactone grade — traceable, tested, certified

Raw Material Sourcing: whole-plant Eclipta prostrata is sourced from Indian growers, with botanical identity confirmed by TLC/HPTLC to guard against the common "peela bhringraj" (Wedelia / Sphagneticola) and other look-alike substitutions before processing.

Manufacturing & Testing: the plant is cleaned, milled, extracted with water or hydro-ethanol and standardised in GMP/ISO-certified processing. Each batch runs a full QC battery — identity confirmation, wedelolactone quantified by HPLC per batch, heavy metals by ICP-MS, and microbial and pesticide screening — before release. ETO testing is available on request for EU shipments.

Documentation: a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis accompanies every shipment, together with MSDS, Allergen Declaration, BSE/TSE-free statement, Non-GMO affidavit and Country of Origin Certificate. To qualify our facility or request specifications, reach our team via the certifications page or the quote form.
