What is Brahmi Extract?

The classical Ayurvedic brain tonic, concentrated to a defined bacoside grade

Bacopa monnieri — Brahmi — is a classical Medhya Rasayana (brain tonic) of Ayurveda, used for centuries to support memory, learning and mental clarity. Its activity is attributed to a family of dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins called bacosides, concentrated in the whole herb (aerial parts).

SV Botanica supplies Brahmi Extract as a whole-herb dry extract standardized to 20% bacosides, assayed by UV spectrophotometry and identified by TLC/HPTLC. It is processed in GMP-certified facilities in India and screened by ICP-MS for heavy metals with a full microbial panel before release. Higher-potency 40% and 50% bacoside grades are produced on request, and an HPLC bacoside A test report is available per batch — so the UV figure is never the only data point you rely on.

A note on identity: true Brahmi is Bacopa monnieri. In some regions the name is also applied to Centella asiatica (Gotu Kola), a different plant standardized to asiaticosides rather than bacosides. Every SV Botanica batch is HPTLC-identified as Bacopa to prevent species substitution — see Brahmi vs Gotu Kola.

We supply supplement brands, nootropic and nutraceutical manufacturers and Ayurvedic formulators across Europe, the USA, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Every batch is backed by a Certificate of Analysis and full export documentation — start a conversation with our team via the quote request form, or read the full Brahmi extract buyer's guide.

Active Constituents

Key compounds driving Brahmi's nootropic profile

Bacoside A

The principal standardisation marker — a defined mixture including bacopaside II, bacopasaponin C and jujubogenin glycosides, quantified by HPLC.

Bacoside B

A companion dammarane triterpenoid saponin that contributes to the total bacoside fraction measured by the UV assay.

Bacopasides

Related triterpenoid saponin glycosides (e.g. bacopaside I, II, X) abundant in the aerial parts and central to bacopa's activity.

Jujubogenin / Pseudojujubogenin

The aglycone backbones of the bacosides — the triterpene cores released on hydrolysis of the saponin glycosides.

Apigenin & Luteolin

Bacopa flavonoids with antioxidant activity that accompany the saponins in the full-spectrum herb matrix.

Alkaloids & Herb Matrix

Minor alkaloids (brahmine, herpestine) and the native plant matrix round out the full-spectrum profile of the standardised grade.

Health Benefits & Research Backing

Evidence from clinical research on Bacopa monnieri and bacosides

Memory & Learning

Standardised Bacopa monnieri has improved memory acquisition and retention versus placebo in randomised trials — the core nootropic positioning.

Ref: Roodenrys S et al., 2002; Neuropsychopharmacology

Cognitive Processing

Chronic bacopa supplementation has supported speed of information processing and learning rate in healthy adults over 12 weeks.

Ref: Stough C et al., 2001; Psychopharmacology

Anxiety & Stress

A standardised extract reduced anxiety and improved cognition in older adults in a randomised, placebo-controlled trial.

Ref: Calabrese C et al., 2008; J Altern Complement Med

Attention & Recall

Bacopa improved delayed word-recall and attention in a systematic review of randomised human clinical trials.

Ref: Pase MP et al., 2012; J Altern Complement Med

Antioxidant & Neuroprotection

Bacosides show antioxidant activity in neural tissue, the mechanistic basis for bacopa's neuroprotective positioning.

Ref: Bhattacharya SK et al., 2000; Phytother Res

Healthy-Ageing Cognition

Bacopa improved memory performance in older persons in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

Ref: Morgan A & Stevens J, 2010; J Altern Complement Med

Brahmi pairs naturally with other nootropic and adaptogen botanicals — see our Ashwagandha Extract and Gotu Kola Extract for cognitive and calm blends. For the science behind the actives, read bacosides & Brahmi's actives.

Quality Assurance & Sourcing

From cultivated wetland herb to a defined bacoside grade — traceable, tested, certified

Raw Material Sourcing: Bacopa is sourced from cultivated and responsibly wild-crafted Bacopa monnieri — a creeping wetland herb — grown in India's traditional bacopa-growing regions, authenticated at source and processed from clean whole aerial parts. HPTLC identity confirms the species is Bacopa, not Centella asiatica.

Manufacturing & Testing: Herb is cleaned, dried, extracted and standardised to bacosides in GMP-certified facilities. Each batch runs a full QC battery — TLC/HPTLC identity, UV bacoside assay, sieve, pH, ash and bulk-density checks, heavy metals by ICP-MS, and a complete microbiological panel — before release. An HPLC bacoside A test report is available per batch when a defined, compound-specific profile is required.

Documentation: Every shipment comes with a Certificate of Analysis, MSDS, Allergen Declaration, BSE/TSE-free statement, Non-GMO affidavit and Country of Origin Certificate. Halal and Kosher grades are available; organic certification on request. To qualify our facility or request specifications, reach our team via the certifications page or the quote form.

Regulatory & Compliance Notes

Key information for global product registration and labelling

European Union

Bacopa monnieri is used in food supplements across several EU member states under national botanical lists. Indian botanical extracts fall under increased official controls (Reg. (EU) 2019/1793) for ethylene oxide, so pre-test ETO and plan for a CHED-D entry; pesticide MRLs (Reg. 396/2005) and heavy-metal limits apply, and labelling must comply with Regulation (EU) 1169/2011. See our regulatory & compliance guide.

United States

Marketed as a dietary ingredient under DSHEA (21 CFR Part 111) with a long history of use. No pre-market approval is required, but importer facility registration with the FDA is needed. Heavy-metal limits (e.g. California Prop 65) make ICP-MS-tested material essential, and structure-function claims require substantiation and FDA notification.

India & Other Markets

A classical Medhya Rasayana, well-established under AYUSH and FSSAI-relevant for supplement use under the FSS (Health Supplements) Regulations 2022. Widely accepted across the Middle East (Halal grades), Southeast Asia and other markets, subject to local heavy-metal and labelling limits.
