Four Plants, One Name

All of these are genuinely called valerian, and they are different plants:

The last row is a different kind of trap: Nardostachys jatamansi merely shares the species epithet with Indian valerian. It is a separate Himalayan plant, and it is CITES Appendix II listed — international trade requires CITES documentation. It is not valerian and should never be supplied as such.

The Assay That Solves It

Here is the fact that should shape every valerian purchase specification.

Valerenic acids are characteristic of Valeriana officinalis. They are not present at meaningful levels in Indian valerian or Mexican valerian. So a specification of "valerenic acids NLT 0.8% w/w by HPLC" is not merely a potency requirement — material that is not V. officinalis structurally cannot meet it. The potency assay and the identity check are the same test.

This is rare. Most botanicals need a separate identity method alongside the potency assay — giloy needs explicit species work, centella needs TLC against reference material. Valerian gets both from one number.

The practical implication: never buy valerian on extract ratio alone. A "4:1 valerian extract" with no valerenic acid figure conceals potency and species simultaneously.

The India Question, Stated Plainly

We are an Indian exporter, so we will be direct about a risk that our own geography creates.

Indian valerian (V. jatamansi) is abundant and materially cheaper in India — and India holds a great deal of the world's botanical extract capacity. A buyer sourcing valerian from an Indian supplier therefore carries a substitution risk they might not carry sourcing from Europe.

The answer is not to avoid Indian supply. It is to specify properly:

  1. Require the binomial in writing — "Valeriana officinalis L.", not "valerian"
  2. Require a valerenic acid specification — which resolves it independently of anyone's word
  3. Verify independently on first order

Those three steps close the risk entirely. A supplier who resists any of them has told you something useful.

Valepotriates: Why We Do Not Specify Them

Valepotriates are iridoid esters in fresh valerian root, sometimes proposed as a standardisation marker. We do not offer a valepotriate-standardised grade, and the reasoning is worth understanding because it applies to specification-writing generally.

A specification you cannot verify on receipt is not a specification. If your own documentation calls for valepotriate data, get the stability limitation recorded in writing rather than left implicit. See our standardisation guide.

The Odour Is Real

It would be unhelpful to be delicate about this. Valerian has a strong, persistent and widely disliked odour, from its volatile fraction including isovaleric acid. It is characteristic, not a defect. Two consequences:

A deodorised grade reduces the volatile fraction. Honestly stated: deodorisation removes part of the plant's natural profile along with the smell. That is a trade worth making for a gummy and usually not worth making for a capsule. See formulation.

Root and Rhizome Only

Valerian's actives are in the underground parts. Aerial material carries little and dilutes the extract.

Because it is an underground part, soil adhesion is a genuine concern — the same issue as coleus root. Acid-insoluble ash is the parameter that catches it; specify NMT 2% and treat it as a real control.
