Most authenticity guides in this series describe deception. Valerian's central problem is legitimate ambiguity: several plants genuinely carry the name, the cheapest is abundant in the world's largest extract-manufacturing geography, and a purchase order saying "valerian extract 4:1" can be filled with any of them in complete good faith. There is also a CITES listing waiting in the confusion.

Route 1 — Indian Valerian Against a V. officinalis Specification
The principal risk, and one we will address directly as an Indian exporter.
Valeriana jatamansi (syn. V. wallichii), traded as tagar, is a genuine valerian — a Himalayan species with its own traditional use. It is also abundant in India and materially cheaper than imported V. officinalis.
Since India holds a great deal of the world's botanical extract capacity, a buyer sourcing valerian from India carries a species risk they may not carry sourcing elsewhere. Often no deception is involved at all: an order saying "valerian" is filled with the valerian that is locally available.
What catches it — decisively: the valerenic acid assay. Valerenic acids are characteristic of V. officinalis and are not present at meaningful levels in Indian valerian. A 0.8% specification therefore cannot be met by V. jatamansi. As our standardisation guide explains, the potency assay and the identity check are the same test — which makes this one of the most cleanly solvable authenticity problems in the botanical trade, provided the buyer actually specifies it.
What does not catch it: an extract ratio, a botanical common name, appearance, or odour — all four species smell strongly.
Route 2 — Mexican Valerian
Valeriana edulis is a further species with its own chemistry, encountered mainly in the Americas. Same detection: the valerenic acid assay.
Route 3 — The Jatamansi Confusion, and CITES
This one carries regulatory consequences, not just quality ones.
Nardostachys jatamansi — commonly called jatamansi or spikenard — is a different Himalayan plant that merely shares the species epithet with Indian valerian. It is not a Valeriana at all.
It is listed under CITES Appendix II, meaning international trade requires CITES documentation.
The problem is nomenclature: Indian trade documentation using "jatamansi" loosely can refer to Valeriana jatamansi (tagar) or Nardostachys jatamansi (spikenard) — plants with different chemistry, different traditional uses and different legal status for export.
What catches it: insisting on the full binomial including genus, and asking directly about CITES status where the epithet jatamansi appears anywhere in the documentation. Neither plant is V. officinalis, and neither should be supplied against a valerian specification.
Route 4 — Ratio-Extract Vagueness
Not substitution but the condition that enables it.
Valerian trades heavily as native-ratio extract (4:1, 5:1), reflecting tincture heritage. A ratio describes a process, not a product — it tells you nothing about how much active is present, which species it came from, or which plant part was used.
A ratio-only specification conceals potency and species at once. Requiring a valerenic acid figure even on ratio grades closes both. We report it on ours.
Route 5 — Aerial Parts and Soil
Two dilution routes specific to an underground crop.
- Aerial-part inclusion: stems and leaves carry little of the valerenic acids and dilute the extract. Caught by assay and microscopy.
- Soil: valerian is root and rhizome, and soil adheres to underground parts. Caught by acid-insoluble ash — the same control that matters on coleus root.

Reading a Low Valerenic Acid Result
Worth its own note, because the usual reading is wrong here.
On most botanicals, a below-specification assay means a weak batch. On valerian it more likely means a different plant. Because the marker is species-specific rather than merely quantitative, a result far below specification should be treated as an identity finding until proven otherwise — and investigated as such, not negotiated as a price adjustment.
Practical Steps for a Buyer
- Specify the binomial — Valeriana officinalis L. "Valerian" is genuinely ambiguous.
- Require valerenic acids by HPLC on every batch, including ratio grades.
- Never buy on extract ratio alone.
- Ask about CITES if "jatamansi" appears anywhere in the documentation.
- Require the plant part declared — root and rhizome.
- Limit acid-insoluble ash.
- Verify independently on first order with valerenic acids in scope — one test covering species and potency together.
- Treat a low assay as an identity question first.
