Valerenic Acids: Two Jobs, One Number

The valerenic acids are a small family — valerenic acid, acetoxyvalerenic acid and hydroxyvalerenic acid — assayed together by HPLC against reference standards and reported as a total, typically NLT 0.8% w/w on a dry basis.

Two properties make this an unusually good marker:

  1. It is stable. A figure measured at manufacture still describes the material on receipt — which is the minimum requirement for a specification to mean anything.
  2. It is species-specific. Valerenic acids are characteristic of Valeriana officinalis and are not present at meaningful levels in Indian valerian (V. jatamansi) or Mexican valerian (V. edulis).

The consequence is the most useful fact in valerian procurement. A 0.8% valerenic acid specification cannot be met by material that is not V. officinalis. The potency assay is the identity check. Compare this with cinnamon, where coumarin doubles as a species marker, or ginkgo, where the flavonol aglycone ratio catches rutin spiking — the same principle, arrived at from a different direction: the best markers answer more than one question.

Ask for the individual acids reported alongside the total. It costs nothing — the total is calculated from them — and an unusual ratio between them is worth a question.

Valepotriates: Why a Specification Cannot Hold

Valepotriates are iridoid esters present in fresh valerian root. They are sometimes proposed as a marker, and the reasoning against it is instructive.

They are chemically unstable. Valepotriates degrade during drying, processing and storage. Properly dried commercial material carries little.

This produces a specification that fails on its own terms:

A number you cannot check on arrival is not a control. This is the general lesson: a marker must survive the supply chain to be a specification.

Valepotriate content also varies markedly between Valeriana species, so it is a weaker identity control than valerenic acids on that count too. We do not offer a valepotriate-standardised grade; where a buyer's documentation calls for one, we ask that the stability limitation be recorded in writing.

Extract Ratios: What They Do and Do Not Tell You

Valerian is widely traded as a native-ratio extract — 4:1, 5:1 — reflecting Western herbal tincture heritage.

Ratios have a legitimate place for full-spectrum and traditional formats. But a ratio describes a process, not a product:

A ratio-only valerian specification conceals potency and species simultaneously. This is why we recommend requiring a valerenic acid figure even on ratio grades — we report it on ours. Buying a native-ratio extract is reasonable; buying one with no idea what is in it is not.

What About GABA?

Worth a note because it appears in marketing. Aqueous valerian extracts contain amino acids including GABA, and this is sometimes cited as a mechanism.

We would treat it cautiously. Whether ingested GABA from a botanical extract contributes meaningfully is debated, and it is not a sound basis for a purchase specification in any case. Standardise on valerenic acids, which are measurable, stable and species-specific.

The Odour Is Chemistry, Not a Defect

Valerian's volatile fraction includes isovaleric acid and related compounds, which is where the notorious smell comes from.

Two specification implications:

Writing a Valerian Specification That Holds

  1. Name the species by binomialValeriana officinalis L. Never just "valerian".
  2. State the part — root and rhizome.
  3. Valerenic acids NLT X% w/w by HPLC, dry basis — on ratio grades too.
  4. Require the individual acids reported.
  5. Require identity vs authentic V. officinalis reference.
  6. Do not specify valepotriates unless you have accepted the stability limitation in writing.
  7. Limit acid-insoluble ash — underground part, soil adheres.
  8. State the grade — standard or deodorised.
  9. Declare carriers and quote assay carrier-free.

When Two Laboratories Disagree

  1. Same acids summed? Some totals include hydroxyvalerenic acid; some do not.
  2. Same basis — dry, carrier-free?
  3. Same reference standard?
  4. A large gap suggests species, not method. This is the valerian-specific reading: because the marker is species-specific, a result far below specification is more likely to mean different plant than weak batch. Treat it as an identity finding until proven otherwise.
