Choose the Triterpene, Then the Grade

Cosmetics — the Largest Application

Centella has become one of the most sought-after cosmetic actives of the last decade, and this is where most volume now goes.

• Grade: cosmetic madecassoside grade, or high-assay asiaticoside. Both are paler than whole-herb material, which matters below.
• Formats: cica repair creams and serums, soothing and barrier-support formulations, post-procedure and sensitive-skin ranges, anti-ageing actives.
• Solubility: higher-assay and cosmetic grades are water- or glycol-soluble and go into the aqueous phase readily.
• Watch — colour: the whole-herb 10% grade is brown to dark green and will tint a white cream noticeably. Higher-assay grades are off-white to pale beige. If you are formulating a pale product, specify the grade on colour as well as on triterpenes.
• Pairing: commonly with aloe vera in soothing systems — a well-established combination, and both are water-soluble so they sit in the same phase.

Cognitive and Nootropic Supplements

• Grade: total triterpenes 10%, or asiaticoside-standardised.
• Format: capsules and tablets — colour is irrelevant, so the cheaper whole-herb grade is usually correct here.
• Pairing: frequently with bacopa and ginkgo in nootropic stacks.
• Watch — the brahmi trap in a blend: if your formula contains both centella and bacopa, and your documentation calls either "brahmi", your own records become ambiguous. Use binomials throughout the bill of materials, not just on the purchase order.

Beauty From Within

A growing bridge between the two industries, and one where the triterpene choice matters commercially.

• Grade: higher-assay with a madecassoside minimum — a brand marketing cica-adjacent benefits in an ingestible should hold the same compound its topical range does.
• Format: capsules, beauty beverages, shots, collagen blends.
• Watch — protein systems: centella is often paired with collagen. Unlike grape seed, triterpenes are not tannins and do not bind proteins the same way, so this pairing is considerably better behaved — but bench it in a liquid format regardless.

Circulatory and Vein Comfort

• Grade: TECA ratio where a pharmaceutical-heritage specification applies; otherwise total triterpenes.
• Format: capsules, tablets, topical leg products.
• Pairing: commonly with grape seed and horse chestnut in vein formulations.

Traditional and Ayurvedic Formats

• Grade: native ratio for classical mandukaparni and medhya rasayana preparations.
• Watch: a native-ratio extract carries triterpenes at an undeclared level — request the figures if content substantiation matters, and request the heavy-metal panel regardless.

Colour: Read It Against the Grade

Worth its own note because it causes avoidable rejections.

The green chlorophyll fraction in whole-herb grades also fades toward brown-green in light — a cosmetic change, not a triterpene loss. Check the assay before rejecting an older drum.

The Provenance Question Belongs in Formulation Too

Not usually a formulation topic, but on centella it should be.

Because the plant is a wetland accumulator of heavy metals, a brand's finished-product metals position depends on where the herb grew. For any product with a demanding metals specification — infant-adjacent, sensitive-skin, or a market with strict limits — prefer cultivated material with declared provenance and verify independently.
