Few botanicals have been transformed by a single trend the way centella has. A traditional Ayurvedic herb with modest, steady demand became — under the name cica — one of the most sought-after cosmetic actives in the world. Demand moved far faster than specifications did, which is why so much centella still trades on a number that says nothing about what is in it.
Two Markets From One Herb
Centella now serves two industries that want different molecules from the same plant:

That divergence is the single most important market fact for a buyer, and it is why a shared "total triterpenes" specification serves neither side well.
What the Cica Boom Did
Centella's cosmetic surge came largely through Korean skincare and spread globally, built on soothing, barrier-repair and post-procedure positioning. The effects on the ingredient market were sharp:
- Demand shifted toward high-assay, pale-coloured grades — the whole-herb material that suited capsules does not suit a white cream.
- Madecassoside became the compound of interest, where nutraceutical buyers had historically worked from asiaticoside or a total.
- Price and volume rose faster than specification discipline. A great deal of centella still trades on a bare total.
- Cultivation expanded, which as noted below is a quality benefit as well as a supply one.
The commercial gap this created: cosmetic brands marketing on cica positioning while buying on total triterpenes. As covered in our buyer's guide, a total can be satisfied by material with very little madecassoside — so the brand's marketing and its purchase specification can be describing different things. Closing that gap costs a supplier nothing: put madecassoside on its own line.
Supply: A Wetland Plant Is Not a Field Crop
Centella's habit shapes its supply in ways buyers should understand.
- It grows in damp ground, marshes and the margins of standing water — historically much of it wild-collected from such sites.
- It is an efficient accumulator of heavy metals present in that water and soil, which makes provenance a quality variable, not just a traceability one.
- Cultivation has expanded in response to demand, and cultivated material offers a controlled growing environment, better batch consistency and real traceability.
The practical consequence: cultivated centella is worth paying for, and not primarily for sustainability reasons. It is the difference between controlling the metals risk and testing for it after the fact. See adulteration and authenticity.
What Is Driving Demand
Cica cosmetics — the growth engine
The dominant driver by value. Soothing, barrier-repair, post-procedure and sensitive-skin positioning are all durable categories rather than passing formats, which suggests this demand has staying power beyond the initial trend cycle.
Beauty from within
The natural extension, and commercially attractive because it lets a brand carry the same active across topical and ingestible ranges. Growing quickly, and the segment where the madecassoside specification point matters most — a brand should hold the same compound in both.
Cognitive and nootropic supplements
The traditional base. Steady rather than spectacular, supported by centella's documented Ayurvedic use as mandukaparni — a genuine heritage rather than a constructed one. Often formulated alongside bacopa, which brings the nomenclature caution discussed below.
Circulatory and vein comfort
A long-established segment, particularly in European markets, and the one where TECA-ratio specifications most often apply.
Traditional Ayurvedic manufacturing
Continuous domestic Indian demand, largely invisible in export statistics but competing for the same herb.
The Nomenclature Drag on the Market
Worth flagging as a market characteristic rather than only a buyer's problem.
Because brahmi refers to both Centella asiatica and Bacopa monnieri in India, trade documentation using the vernacular name is genuinely ambiguous — and both plants are exported from India in volume, often by the same suppliers.
This produces real friction: mismatched orders, confused specifications, and the occasional finished product whose bill of materials cannot be reconciled. The fix is binomials throughout, and we have written a dedicated guide to the two brahmis because it recurs so persistently.
The Regional Picture
East Asia
The origin of the cica phenomenon and still the most sophisticated cosmetic market for centella, with buyers who specify madecassoside directly rather than through a total. A useful benchmark for what a demanding centella specification looks like.
European Union
Strong cosmetic demand plus the established circulatory segment. The general botanical import controls apply — pesticide MRLs, heavy metals, ethylene oxide. Given centella's accumulator behaviour, the metals block deserves particular attention for EU-bound material.
United States
Growing cosmetic demand following the cica wave, alongside the nootropic and beauty-from-within segments under DSHEA.
India and South Asia
Origin, a major producer, and a substantial domestic traditional-medicine consumer competing for the same material.
India's Position
India is within centella's native range, cultivates it, and has a mature extract manufacturing base with NABL-accredited HPLC capability for the individual triterpene work and ICP-MS for the metals.
The qualification question within India is the one set out in our supplier guide: will they report all four triterpenes, can they produce numeric ICP-MS metals with collection status, and do they use binomials rather than "brahmi". Those vary considerably between suppliers.
What This Means When You Buy
- Specify the compound, not the total. Madecassoside for cica work.
- Pay for cultivated material where your metals position matters — it controls the risk rather than testing for it.
- Use binomials everywhere, including your own bill of materials.
- Verify metals independently. The ingredient in this range where it most clearly earns its cost.
- Match grade to colour as well as to assay — whole-herb material will tint a pale cosmetic.
- Expect the cosmetic premium and budget for it rather than shopping the nutraceutical grade into a cica product.
