Cissus quadrangularis — hadjod in Hindi, asthisamhari in Sanskrit, both names meaning roughly "bone joiner" — is a succulent climbing vine of the Vitaceae family, the same family as the grape, native to India, Sri Lanka and parts of Africa and Southeast Asia. Its distinctive quadrangular aerial stem has been used in Ayurveda for bone and joint support for centuries, and it has since become one of the most widely used botanicals in sports and bone-health nutrition.
Commercially, cissus is quoted almost universally on "ketosterones" — 2.5%, 5%, sometimes 10%. It is worth being direct about what that specification is and is not. "Ketosterone" is not a single defined compound with a universally agreed reference standard the way curcumin or piperine is. It denotes a class of ketone-bearing steroidal constituents, and the figures reported against it depend heavily on which analytical method a laboratory runs and what it calibrates against.
The practical consequence is that two suppliers quoting 5% ketosterones may not be quoting the same thing, and a buyer comparing them on that number alone is comparing two numbers rather than two materials. This is not an accusation aimed at the trade; it is a straightforward analytical fact that the trade has been slow to state plainly.
