Start With the Assay's Weakness

Cissus is standardised on ketosterones — a class of ketone-bearing steroidal constituents rather than one defined compound.

A class assay measures a category, so anything in the category satisfies it. Where a curcumin specification requires you to add curcumin, a ketosterone specification can be approached with a range of steroidal material — and inexpensive plant sterols are readily available.

That is the structural vulnerability. What follows are the four routes we control for.

Route One: Sterol Addition

Adding cheap phytosterol material to lift a class-based figure.

What catches it: HPLC profiling of the flavonoid and phytosterol fraction. Authentic cissus stem extract has a characteristic pattern — relationships between quercetin, flavonoids, β-sitosterol and the triterpenoids. Added sterol material raises one part of that pattern without the rest following, and the ratios stop looking like the plant.

This is why we report a profile rather than only an assay: a single number can be lifted, but a fingerprint has to be reproduced across several constituents at once.

Route Two: Part Substitution

Root, leaf or immature growth milled in with aerial stem. Cheaper material, different composition, same botanical.

What catches it: the aerial-stem-only declaration, acid-insoluble ash (root brings soil), microscopy on raw material, and the HPLC profile, since composition differs by part.

Route Three: Milled Powder as Extract

The simplest and easiest to detect. Milled stem powder is unconcentrated, and the assay will not approach an extract specification.

What catches it: the assay itself, plus colour — milled stem is noticeably paler than extract. When a cissus offer is dramatically below market, this is the first thing to rule out.

Route Four: The Sports-Channel Risk

This one deserves careful handling, because it is easy to be either alarmist or complacent.

The facts, stated plainly:

Those three facts do not mean cissus supply is commonly adulterated in this way — we have no basis for saying that and would not. What they mean is that the structure is one where an explicit analytical control is proportionate rather than paranoid.

What catches it: banned-substance screening by LC-MS/MS, which we offer on request and recommend as standard for any buyer supplying tested athletes or a certified sports channel.

A necessary clarification: the ketosterones in cissus are plant constituents, and the assay figure says nothing about anabolic activity. The screening recommendation concerns what might be added to a material, not what the plant contains. We would not want the terminology to blur those two things.

What Cissus Is Not Especially Vulnerable To

Worth stating, because a balanced risk picture is more useful than an exhaustively alarming one.

Species substitution is a comparatively minor concern here. Cissus is widely cultivated rather than wild-collected across most of the Indian supply base, and the quadrangular stem is morphologically distinctive. The identification problem that dominates wild-harvested barks and roots is much less pressing on this ingredient.

The analytical question on cissus is about what the assay means, not usually about which plant arrived.
