The processing chain is short and worth understanding, because quality decisions are made early in it:
- Harvest — mature aerial stem cut, leaving the plant to regrow;
- Cleaning and drying — the stem is succulent and high in moisture, so drying must be prompt and controlled. Slow or poor drying is where microbiological problems begin;
- Size reduction — milled to extraction grade;
- Extraction — hydroalcoholic for standardised grades, with the ratio and solvent determining the grade;
- Concentration and drying — to powder, with carrier where specified;
- QC and release — assay with method declared, HPLC profile, contaminants, microbiology.
Step two is where most avoidable quality loss happens on this ingredient. A succulent stem dried badly arrives at the extractor already compromised, and no amount of downstream testing recovers it — it only detects it.
