Two Products, One Plant

Mentha × piperita L. yields two commercially important materials that share nothing but a source plant:

These are not two grades of one thing. They are different product classes with different regulatory treatment in several markets.

Why a Menthol-Standardised Powder Cannot Exist

The chemistry is simple and worth stating plainly.

Menthol is a volatile monoterpene. Volatility is its defining property — it is what makes peppermint smell of peppermint, and what allows steam distillation to capture it in the first place.

Making a dry leaf extract involves extraction and then drying. Drying removes volatiles. So the menthol that steam distillation concentrates into the oil is largely lost in the process that makes the powder.

A genuine peppermint leaf extract therefore carries low menthol. Not zero, but nowhere near 35–55%.

So what arrives if you specify it anyway? One of three things. An oil-loaded or oil-adsorbed powder — peppermint oil sprayed onto a carrier, which is a legitimate product but is not a leaf extract and behaves differently. A mislabelled oil. Or a material that simply does not meet the spec and gets argued about later. None is what the buyer intended, and all three are avoidable by naming the product class.

How to Tell Which You Actually Need

A good supplier will ask which of these you are doing. One who accepts "peppermint, menthol 40%, powder" without comment has not engaged with your problem.

The Extract's Own Marker: Rosmarinic Acid

Peppermint leaf extract is standardised on rosmarinic acid, typically NLT 5% by HPLC.

A total-polyphenol basis is also available where a broader claim rather than a specific marker is wanted.

But Rosmarinic Acid Does Not Identify the Species

An important limitation, and one that mirrors what we describe on licorice and maca.

Rosmarinic acid is the principal phenolic acid of the entire Lamiaceae family. It is named for rosemary and occurs in sage, oregano, thyme, tulsi, spearmint and cornmint.

So a rosmarinic acid figure is a good concentration measure and a poor identity test. Which matters, because the Mentha genus is a thicket of species and hybrids that are readily confused in trade:

Species identity rests on TLC and HPLC fingerprint comparison against authentic Mentha × piperita reference material, which resolves the wider flavonoid profile where the species diverge.

A Note on the Plant Itself

Peppermint is a sterile hybrid of watermint and spearmint. It does not come true from seed, so every commercial planting descends from cuttings — propagated vegetatively.

Worth knowing because it means varietal identity depends on planting-stock provenance rather than on seed certification, which is a different kind of supply-chain control from most crops.

Note the menthol line. We report it not because we are selling menthol, but because it makes the product class verifiable from the document itself — the same logic as reporting azadirachtin on a neem leaf extract.

And note the ash rows: mint leaf runs characteristically high on total ash, so acid-insoluble ash is the figure that carries information. A generic botanical ash limit will reject good material.

  2. Product class declared on the certificate
  3. Species by binomial — Mentha × piperita
  4. Identity fingerprint against authentic peppermint reference
  5. Rosmarinic acid by HPLC on dry basis
  6. Menthol reported, to confirm class
  7. Acid-insoluble ash limited; total ash treated as characteristic
  8. Water-soluble grade availability for beverage formats
