Neem is standardised two entirely different ways for two entirely different industries, and the numbers do not translate. One serves crop protection and is measured on an insecticidal compound concentrated in seed. The other serves cosmetics and supplements and is measured on the leaf's bitter fraction. Confusing them is not a grade error — it is a category error.
Two Industries, Two Markers

Both are legitimate. They belong to different supply chains with different registrations, and a certificate from one does not qualify material for the other.
Azadirachtin: What It Actually Is
Azadirachtin is a highly oxidised triterpenoid limonoid — a structurally complex molecule — and it is the principal insecticidal constituent of neem. It acts as an insect antifeedant and growth regulator, which is the entire basis of neem's use in crop protection.
Two facts matter commercially:
- It is concentrated in seed, particularly the kernel, and present at much lower levels in leaf.
- Concentrating it requires seed as the starting material. You cannot make a high-azadirachtin product from leaf.
So a high azadirachtin figure is not a measure of extract quality. It is a statement about which part of the tree the material came from and what it was made for.
Bitter Principles: The Appropriate Basis
The leaf's characteristic fraction is its bitter principles — chiefly nimbidin and related limonoids, alongside nimbin and a broader triterpenoid complex.
This is measured by UV or gravimetric methods, which means it carries the class-assay caveats discussed for fenugreek and gymnema:
- Lower specificity than chromatography.
- Protocol-dependent — different laboratories, different figures.
- Not portable between suppliers unless the method matches.
So state the method, and anchor it chromatographically — which brings us to nimbin.
The chromatographic anchor: require nimbin by HPLC alongside the bitter-principles figure. Nimbin is a defined compound characteristic of neem leaf, quantifiable against a reference standard, and therefore comparable between laboratories in a way the class assay is not. One extra line converts a protocol-dependent number into a verifiable specification.
Azadirachtin as a Diagnostic
Here is the elegant part, and the reason we report a compound we are not selling.
Because azadirachtin is concentrated in seed and low in leaf, its level relative to bitter-principles content is a direct readout of plant part:

The parallel with coumarin on cinnamon is exact: a compound measured not because you want it, but because it tells you what you have.
Nimbin as the Leaf Marker
Nimbin is a principal limonoid of neem leaf and serves three purposes at once:
- Identity — confirms the material is neem.
- Chromatographic anchor — a defined compound with a reference standard, comparable across laboratories.
- Part indication — read alongside azadirachtin, the nimbin-to-azadirachtin relationship characterises leaf versus seed material.
The Ash Question
Worth addressing under standardisation because it produces avoidable rejections.
Neem leaf carries characteristically high total ash — higher than many botanicals. This is a property of the material, not evidence of mineral bulking.
A buyer applying a generic botanical total-ash limit of, say, NMT 5% will reject good neem. The correct approach:
- Total ash: reported, with a generous limit (NMT 12% is realistic for leaf).
- Acid-insoluble ash: tightly limited (NMT 2%). This is the figure that distinguishes soil, grit and woody stem material from the leaf's legitimate mineral content.
Same principle as the ash handling on garcinia HCA salts — know which ash figure carries the information.
Writing a Neem Specification That Holds
- Name the species by binomial — Azadirachta indica, not "neem", and not risking confusion with Melia azedarach.
- Name the plant part — leaf — declared on every batch.
- State bitter principles with the method, on dry basis.
- Require nimbin by HPLC as the chromatographic anchor.
- Require azadirachtin reported as the part verifier — and set a maximum, not a minimum.
- Require seed/kernel material absent explicitly.
- Limit acid-insoluble ash; treat total ash as characteristic.
Point five is worth emphasising because it inverts normal practice: on every other ingredient in this series, marker specifications are minima. Here you want a ceiling on azadirachtin.
When a Supplier Offers Both
Some Indian manufacturers legitimately produce both agricultural azadirachtin concentrate and cosmetic-grade leaf extract. That is not a problem in itself — but it is worth asking how the two streams are kept separate, since cross-contamination would put azadirachtin where you do not want it. A manufacturer with a clear answer is demonstrating process control; one who has not considered the question is telling you something else.
