Why Neem Is a Different Kind of Problem

Run a standard authenticity package on adulterated neem and it comes back clean. TLC identity: neem. HPLC fingerprint: neem. Species declaration: neem.

All correct. And the drum may still contain the wrong material, because as covered in our buyer's guide, one tree yields four commercially distinct materials at different price points — leaf, bark, seed oil and azadirachtin concentrate.

The economics do the rest. Neem is harvested by cutting branches, so leaf, stem and twig arrive together. Seed is a separate stream with its own, generally higher-value, agricultural market. Different parts, different costs, one species.

Route 1 — Plant Part Substitution

The dominant route. Bark supplied against a leaf specification, or seed-derived material blended in, or the parts simply not tracked at all.

What catches it: the nimbin and azadirachtin marker pair.

The specification line that closes this: "Part used: leaf, declared per batch. Seed and kernel material absent. Azadirachtin to be reported by HPLC, maximum [X] ppm; nimbin to be reported." Note the maximum — on this ingredient the marker ceiling is the control, which inverts normal practice.

Route 2 — Stem and Twig Inclusion

Not always deliberate, and very common. Neem is harvested by cutting branches; separating leaf from stem is labour. Milled fine, stem and twig material adds weight and dilutes the bitter-principles content.

What catches it: the bitter-principles assay registers the dilution, and acid-insoluble ash rises with woody material and associated grit.

The ash reading is the more useful of the two here — and it requires getting the ash logic right, discussed below.

Route 3 — Melia azedarach Confusion

The species risk worth knowing about. Melia azedarach — Persian lilac, bead tree, chinaberry — is a related Meliaceae species that is not neem, shares common names in some regions, and carries a different and more concerning toxicity profile.

Because it is a genuine look-alike within the same family, this is a real sourcing hazard rather than a theoretical one.

What catches it: a species declaration by binomial — Azadirachta indica A.Juss. — plus TLC identity against authentic neem reference material and HPLC fingerprint comparison. Melia does not produce neem's limonoid profile, so nimbin and azadirachtin are both informative here too.

Route 4 — Spent Leaf and Exhausted Marc

Extraction residue, dried, milled, blended back. Retains neem's distinctive odour, which is persuasive on this material because the smell is so recognisable.

What catches it: the bitter-principles assay, since the actives are depleted; and nimbin by HPLC, which falls with them.

Route 5 — Undeclared Carriers, and the Ash Trap

Maltodextrin, starch, rice flour — legitimate when declared.

Neem has a specific complication that makes this harder to police than usual: neem leaf carries characteristically high total ash. That is a property of the material, not evidence of bulking.

So the total-ash figure that would normally flag mineral bulking is uninformative here — and worse, a buyer applying a generic botanical ash limit will reject good neem while still missing the bulking.

The Cross-Contamination Question

Worth raising because it is specific to neem's dual market.

Some manufacturers legitimately produce both agricultural azadirachtin concentrate and cosmetic-grade leaf extract. That is not itself a problem — but it creates a cross-contamination pathway that does not exist at a single-stream producer.

Ask directly: do you also produce agri-grade azadirachtin, and how are the streams segregated? A manufacturer with a clear answer is demonstrating process control. One who has not thought about it has told you something useful for free.

Practical Steps for a Buyer

  1. Require azadirachtin with a maximum, not a minimum. The single most important line on a neem specification.
  2. Require the part declaration on every batch, not qualification only.
  3. Require nimbin by HPLC as a comparable anchor.
  4. Specify the binomial to exclude Melia azedarach.
  5. Get the ash logic right — tight on acid-insoluble, generous on total. Otherwise you will reject good material and miss bad.
  6. Ask about stream segregation if the supplier also makes agri-grade.
  7. Third-party verify with the marker pair in scope, not bitter principles alone — a class-assay result reproduces the blind spot.
