Abundant, and Nobody's Priority

India is the world's largest mango producer. Orchards are pruned routinely, trees are replaced, and leaf is generated continuously in quantities far beyond what the extract industry uses.

The advantages are genuine:

The disadvantage sits in the same sentence as the advantage: the leaf is a residue of a system designed to produce fruit. Nobody chose the cultivar for leaf composition, scheduled pruning around leaf maturity, or designed the spray programme with a supplement ingredient in mind.

The Spray Problem, Precisely

This is the control that matters most on this ingredient, so it is worth stating exactly rather than in general terms.

Commercial mango cultivation uses agrochemical programmes against fruit fly, anthracnose, powdery mildew and other pressures. Those programmes are designed to deliver marketable fruit within residue limits that apply to fruit.

Three things follow:

  1. The leaf is a directly sprayed surface — often more so than the fruit, and without the peel that is discarded before eating;
  2. Residue limits differ by commodity, and a leaf used as a botanical ingredient is not the commodity the programme was designed against;
  3. Nobody in the orchard is thinking about your specification — the grower's obligations end at the fruit.

So compliance for a leaf ingredient cannot be inferred from the fruit's compliance. It has to be screened, and the orchard's spray history has to be knowable.

The Roadside Question

A second sourcing hazard specific to abundant by-product materials.

Mango trees grow everywhere in India — along roads, on boundaries, in gardens. Leaf collected opportunistically from such trees is cheap and requires no orchard relationship at all.

Collection and Drying

  1. Collection — mature leaf from managed orchards, with maturity recorded;
  2. Sorting — diseased and damaged leaf removed; stem and petiole separated;
  3. Drying — prompt and temperature-controlled. Mango leaf is thick and leathery compared with papaya leaf, so it is less immediately perishable — but slow drying in humid conditions still costs colour, phenolic content and microbiological quality;
  4. Milling and extraction — at certified facilities, with source verification on the finished extract.

The Cultivar Reality

Worth stating plainly because it is a limit on what any supplier can honestly promise.

India grows mango across a great many cultivars, and by-product leaf is not generally segregated by variety. Composition is not uniform across cultivars, so some batch-to-batch variation from this source is structural rather than a quality failure.

A supplier offering single-cultivar mango leaf at commodity pricing is worth questioning. What is achievable is maturity control, prompt drying, orchard sourcing and honest reporting of the observed assay range.

  1. "Is the leaf orchard-sourced, and is spray history recorded?"
  2. "Is it screened to EU MRL, and can I see a recent report?"
  3. "Is leaf maturity specified at collection?"

The first question separates a managed supply chain from opportunistic collection, and it is the one most likely to be answered vaguely.
