Mango leaf is a young ingredient with an old problem in a new form. It is bought almost entirely on one marker compound — and that compound is made by plants that have nothing to do with mangoes. Which means the number on your certificate is answering a question you did not ask.
What Is Mango Leaf Extract?
Mango leaf extract is prepared from the leaf of Mangifera indica L., family Anacardiaceae. India is the world's largest mango producer, so the raw material is genuinely abundant here.
The commercial driver is mangiferin, a xanthone C-glucoside with research interest in metabolic and antioxidant areas. In practice, buyers specify mango leaf to get mangiferin.
The Problem With That
Mangiferin is not unique to mango. It occurs in several unrelated plants — Anemarrhena asphodeloides, Salacia and Swertia species, honeybush (Cyclopia) and others — and some of these are established commercial sources of the compound.
So "mangiferin 20%" tells you the compound is present at 20%. It does not tell you where it came from.
This is a structurally different problem from the usual botanical substitution. Nobody is passing off a different leaf as mango leaf — the risk is that material meeting your marker specification was assembled from a cheaper source of that marker, and every line on a conventional certificate would still read correctly.
What Establishes Origin
The profile, not the peak.
Mango leaf carries a characteristic pattern: mangiferin alongside isomangiferin, gallic acid derivatives, flavonoid glycosides and benzophenone constituents. The relationships between them differ from those in other mangiferin-bearing plants.

The Variable Nobody Specifies
Leaf maturity. Mangiferin content differs substantially between young and mature mango leaf — more than most buyers expect.
Left unspecified, it is an uncontrolled input that moves batch to batch and forces the extractor to compensate elsewhere. Require maturity to be declared. Our guide to leaf maturity and variability covers what moves and by how much.

The third row deserves attention. Reaching 60% requires purification that strips much of the leaf's supporting profile. If your product story rests on "mango leaf" as a whole-plant ingredient, a 60% grade is a different proposition — and, incidentally, the grade where a substituted mangiferin source would be least detectable, since the supporting profile that reveals origin is largely gone.
Buy 60% when you want mangiferin in minimal mass. Buy native ratio when you want mango leaf.
Residues: Take This One Seriously
Mango leaf is a by-product of intensive fruit cultivation.
Commercial mango orchards run agrochemical programmes designed to protect fruit, against residue limits that apply to fruit. Leaves are not the target crop, residue behaviour on a leaf differs from that in a peeled fruit, and nobody set the spray schedule with a supplement ingredient in mind.
So EU MRL screening on this ingredient is substantive rather than routine. Require it, and ask whether orchard agrochemical history is recorded — see our sourcing guide.
The Allergen Note
Rarely mentioned, worth knowing: mango is in the Anacardiaceae, the family that includes cashew and poison ivy, and mango plant material contains constituents related to those causing contact reactions in sensitised individuals.
For oral use at normal inclusion this is not generally treated as a significant concern. For topical and cosmetic applications it is a question for your safety assessor — better raised at formulation than after launch.
