Standardising an extract on a compound only works as an identity control if that compound is characteristic of the plant. Mangiferin is not. It is a widely distributed xanthone, made by plants from several unrelated families, and at least one of them is a cheaper commercial source than mango leaf.
The Compound
Mangiferin is a xanthone C-glucoside. It was named for mango, which is where it was first characterised, and that naming does a certain amount of quiet damage — it encourages the assumption that the compound belongs to the plant.
It does not. Mangiferin is found in:
- Mangifera indica — mango, in leaf, bark and other tissues;
- Anemarrhena asphodeloides — a rhizome used in Chinese medicine, and an established commercial mangiferin source;
- Salacia species;
- Swertia species;
- Cyclopia — honeybush;
- and others, including Iris species.
Why This Breaks the Specification
An assay-only specification for mango leaf extract asks: is mangiferin present at X%? It never asks: did it come from a mango tree? A material built from a different mangiferin source answers the first question perfectly and the second not at all — and nothing on a conventional certificate exposes the difference.
Compare this with a marker that is characteristic — withanolides for ashwagandha, bacosides for brahmi. There, the assay does double duty. Here it does not, and treating it as though it does is the error.
What Verification Looks Like
Origin is established by profile comparison against authenticated M. indica leaf reference material.
Mango leaf carries a characteristic constellation:

A material assembled to hit a mangiferin number from another source will generally match on the marker and diverge on the surrounding pattern — different companion compounds, different ratios.
The High-Assay Difficulty
An honest limitation that follows directly, and one we would rather state than let a buyer assume verification is equally strong at every grade.
The more purified the extract, the less profile there is left to compare.

At high purity you are approaching an isolated compound, and an isolated compound carries little information about its botanical origin regardless of who tests it.
The practical consequences:
- For high-assay grades, supply-chain traceability does work that analysis cannot — know the processor, know the raw material intake;
- Verification at the raw material and intermediate stage matters more when the finished material is highly purified;
- If the "mango leaf" identity is central to your product claim, a native-ratio or moderate-assay grade is the more defensible choice.
Is Mangiferin From Another Source Inferior?
A fair question, and the answer is not simply yes.
Mangiferin from Anemarrhena is mangiferin. If your formulation is dosed on the compound and your marketing describes the compound, a different botanical source may be perfectly acceptable — and might be cheaper.
The problem is not that other sources are bad. It is that you should know which one you are buying — because your label, your claim substantiation and your customer's expectations were probably built around "mango leaf", and an ingredient sourced elsewhere makes that description inaccurate.
If mango origin genuinely does not matter for your product, say so and buy on the compound. What should not happen is paying for one and receiving the other without knowing.
