Three Disqualifying Red Flags

  1. Will only report a total triterpene figure. As covered in our standardisation guide, the total is calculated from four individually measured compounds — so declining to report them is withholding data they already hold, not economising. It is the clearest possible signal.
  2. Reports heavy metals as "complies" without numbers. On a wetland accumulator this is inadequate. You need per-element figures to make any judgement.
  3. Uses "brahmi" in their documentation without a binomial. The name covers both Centella asiatica and Bacopa monnieri. A supplier writing it loosely is either indifferent to the ambiguity or has not encountered a buyer who cared.

The two-request filter: "Please report asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid individually on every batch CoA, and provide heavy metals by ICP-MS with numeric per-element limits plus collection status." Neither costs a competent manufacturer anything. Both are routinely absent. How readily they are accepted is the assessment.

This section's weight is deliberate. Centella asiatica grows in damp ground and standing water and accumulates heavy metals from its environment, so provenance is a quality variable rather than a traceability nicety. A supplier who can describe where the herb grew — and better, who cultivates it — is controlling the risk rather than testing for it after the fact.

3. Species Identity — 20 points

The three-batch comparison should cover metals as well as triterpenes on this ingredient. Metals figures that vary widely between batches indicate material drawn from differing collection sites — which is exactly the provenance risk you are trying to control.

Apply a hard floor on section 2: below 15 of 25, decline. Triterpene composition is a commercial problem you can negotiate around; heavy metals in a wetland accumulator are not.

First-Order Protocol

  1. Nominate an independent laboratory — Eurofins, SGS or Intertek — with heavy metals by ICP-MS and the four triterpenes individually in the scope. A total-only assay reproduces two blind spots simultaneously.
  2. Treat the independent metals result as the primary finding on this ingredient, not a formality.
  3. Compare the independent triterpene split against the supplier CoA and against your compound-specific minimum.
  4. Retain a sealed, dated sample, stored dark given the colour sensitivity.
  5. Re-verify at batch three, then annually — and always on a change of collection area, since provenance drives the metals profile.
