Start With the Dosing Basis, Not the Oil Weight

Before any format discussion, settle one thing: are you dosing on oil weight or on GLA weight?

A label claiming "1,000 mg evening primrose oil" is a statement about oil. A label claiming "1,000 mg evening primrose oil providing 90 mg GLA" is a statement about the delivered active, and it is the version that survives a change of grade, supplier or crop year. Because GLA varies within the 8–10% specification window, two honest batches can differ by 20% in delivered GLA at the same oil weight.

Practical rule: fix the target in milligrams of GLA per serving, then back-calculate the oil or powder weight from the batch CoA — using the low end of the specification, not the midpoint. The Stability Point That Catches Formulators

This is the genuinely evening-primrose-specific technical issue: the enemy is oxygen, not heat alone, and the damage is invisible on a potency assay.

A polyunsaturated oil oxidises continuously from the moment it is pressed. Every transfer, every headspace, every week above 25°C moves the peroxide value. The GLA figure barely moves — which is why a formulator who tracks only potency discovers the problem as a consumer odour complaint eighteen months later.

Three consequences worth designing around:

  1. Specify PV at delivery and test it on receipt. Then minimise your own holding time and keep drums sealed and blanketed.
  2. Build overage against GLA specification range, not oxidation. Oxidative loss of GLA within shelf life is small if PV is controlled; the overage exists to cover assay range and process loss, while packaging and antioxidants — not overage — manage rancidity.
  3. Assay the finished product's oxidation state in stability studies, not only its GLA. PV and anisidine at 3, 6 and 12 months tell you what the consumer will smell.
