Sea Buckthorn Oil — from India's Himalayan berries. Exceptionally rich in palmitoleic acid (Omega-7) and carotenoids, one of the most potent regenerative carrier oils for premium anti-ageing, wound healing, and scar treatment formulations.
Sea Buckthorn Oil (Hippophae rhamnoides) is extracted from the bright orange berries of sea buckthorn — a hardy shrub growing wild in India's Himalayan regions of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. It contains the full spectrum of omega fatty acids (3, 6, 7, and 9) with exceptionally high carotenoid content giving the fruit oil its characteristic deep orange-red colour. Two distinctly different oils come from this berry: fruit oil (from the pulp — very high carotenoids and palmitoleic Omega-7) and seed oil (from the seeds — higher in linoleic and alpha-linolenic, lighter colour).
SV Botanica supplies fruit CO2 extract (highest carotenoid and active content), cold-pressed fruit oil, and seed cold-pressed oil — all sourced from India's Himalayan production network. Use at 0.1–2% in formulations due to the extremely intense orange colour of the fruit oil. The seed oil can be used at higher levels with lighter colour impact.
Palmitoleic acid (Omega-7) is naturally present in young, healthy skin — depleted with ageing. Topical application clinically linked to improved skin regeneration, wound healing, and scar tissue improvement.
One of the highest natural carotenoid concentrations of any carrier oil — beta-carotene, lycopene, and zeaxanthin provide powerful antioxidant and provitamin A activity for anti-ageing formulations.
Clinically documented wound healing acceleration. Used in radiation dermatitis treatment, post-surgical recovery, and burn management formulations.
Oral supplementation clinically linked to vaginal dryness relief, dry eye support, and gastrointestinal mucous membrane health via Omega-7 activity.
Sea buckthorn fruit oil has one of the richest active profiles of any carrier oil — combining unique fatty acids with extreme carotenoid density:
| Palmitoleic Acid (C16:1, Ω7) | 19–35% (fruit) — skin-identical FA; regenerative, skin barrier |
| Palmitic Acid (C16:0) | 28–38% (fruit) — skin-identical saturated FA |
| Linoleic Acid (C18:2) | 4–10% (fruit) — skin barrier support |
| Carotenoids (total) | 100–500 ppm — beta-carotene, lycopene, zeaxanthin, antioxidant |
| Tocopherols | ~250 mg/kg — natural Vitamin E |
| Tocotrienols | Present — potent antioxidant form of Vitamin E |
| Phytosterols | Beta-sitosterol — anti-inflammatory, skin barrier |
Sea buckthorn occupies a unique niche — the richest natural source of palmitoleic acid combined with extreme carotenoid content:
| Oil | Palmitoleic (Ω7) | Skin Feel | Best Known For |
| Sea Buckthorn Fruit ★ | 19–35% | Rich, slow | Omega-7, carotenoids, regenerative |
| Sea Buckthorn Seed | <1% palmitoleic | Light | Omega-3, ALA, barrier repair |
| Rosehip Seed | ~0.5–1% | Dry, light | Retinoids, carotenoids, scar |
| Macadamia Oil | 16–22% | Very rich | Palmitoleic, aged skin |
| Argan Oil | <1% | Silky | Tocopherols, stability, hair |
Sea buckthorn fruit oil will stain formulations and skin orange at higher concentrations — use 0.1–2% in leave-on products. Seed oil can be used at 5–20% with lighter colour impact. CO2 extracted fruit oil has maximum actives — recommended for premium product positioning. Excellent combined with rosehip seed oil for synergistic anti-ageing formulation.
Sea buckthorn fruit oil has a distinctive fatty acid profile — unusually high in palmitoleic (Omega-7) and saturated palmitic acid (unlike most liquid vegetable oils):
Beyond the fatty acids, key cosmetic actives in the unsaponifiable fraction:
| Carotenoids (total) | 100–500 ppm — beta-carotene, lycopene, zeaxanthin |
| Tocopherols | ~250 mg/kg — Vitamin E |
| Tocotrienols | Present — potent antioxidant form of Vitamin E |
| Phytosterols | Anti-inflammatory, skin barrier support |
| Flavonoids | Quercetin, kaempferol — antioxidant |

Always dilute sea buckthorn fruit oil — it will stain formulations and skin orange at high levels. 0.1–2% in most leave-on products is sufficient for full active benefit. Seed oil can be used at higher levels with lighter colour impact. CO2 grade has maximum actives for premium product positioning. Combine with rosehip for synergistic anti-ageing effect.
Rosehip Seed Oil is supplied in dark-glass or HDPE packaging to protect against oxidation. Nitrogen-flushed packaging available for premium unrefined grades.
10ml–100ml amber glass vials for evaluation and stability testing.
Amber HDPE or dark glass containers with tamper-evident caps.
Food/cosmetic grade HDPE drums with tamper-evident seals. Standard commercial pack.
Intermediate bulk containers for large commercial orders.
Store in cool (below 20°C), dark conditions away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep containers sealed — rosehip seed oil oxidises rapidly on exposure to air. Nitrogen blanket packing available on request to maximise shelf life. Recommended shelf life: 12–18 months from date of manufacture when stored correctly.
Minimum Order Quantity
