About Rosehip Seed Oil

Rosehip Seed Oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of Rosa canina — the wild dog rose. It is one of the most nutrient-dense plant oils available, exceptionally rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (linoleic and alpha-linolenic), natural retinoid precursors, and beta-carotene. This composition makes it among the most clinically studied and commercially sought-after carrier oils in premium skincare globally.

Unlike most carrier oils, rosehip seed oil has a characteristic deep orange-red colour from its carotenoid content and a distinct earthy aroma. It has a light, dry skin feel and absorbs rapidly without greasy residue — making it ideal in high-end anti-ageing serums, scar treatments, and skin regeneration formulations. Cold-pressed unrefined grade retains maximum actives; refined (RBD) grade provides a neutral colour and odour base for white or lightly coloured formulations.

Key Skin Benefits

Anti-Ageing

Natural retinoid precursors support cell turnover and collagen synthesis. High linoleic acid helps maintain skin barrier integrity and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Scar Reduction

Clinically documented for reducing surgical and acne scar appearance. Linoleic acid supports healthy tissue regeneration and corrects post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation

Beta-carotene and retinoid precursors gently brighten skin tone. Widely used in formulations targeting dark spots, sun damage, melasma, and uneven complexion.

Skin Barrier Repair

Balanced Omega-3 and Omega-6 supports restoration of compromised skin barriers — especially effective in eczema-prone, dry, dehydrated, and sensitive skin formulations.

Active Constituents

Rosehip seed oil's cosmetic value comes from both its fatty acid profile and its unsaponifiable fraction of bioactive compounds:

Linoleic Acid (Omega-6)35–55% — skin barrier integrity, acne control, anti-ageing
Alpha-Linolenic Acid (Omega-3)16–25% — anti-inflammatory, calming, soothing
Beta-Carotene100–200 ppm — antioxidant, provitamin A, orange-red colour
Trans-Retinoic Acid PrecursorsPresent — cell renewal, collagen stimulation
Tocopherols (Vitamin E)Natural antioxidant — supports oil stability and skin protection
PhytosterolsBeta-sitosterol, campesterol — skin barrier, anti-inflammatory
LycopeneAntioxidant carotenoid — supports photoprotection

How Rosehip Compares

Among high-linoleic carrier oils, rosehip stands out for combining carotenoid colour actives, retinoid precursors, and a balanced Omega-3/Omega-6 ratio — making it more cosmetically active than most alternatives:

Oil Linoleic Skin Feel Key Strength
Rosehip Seed ★ 35–55% Dry, fast-absorb Retinoids + carotenoids + Omega-3
Sea Buckthorn 30–40% Rich, slow-absorb Palmitoleic, carotenoids
Argan Oil 28–36% Silky, light Tocopherols, oxidative stability
Marula Oil 5–10% Silky, medium High oleic, very stable
Jojoba Oil <1% (wax ester) Dry, non-greasy Exceptional stability, all skin types

Formulator's Note

Rosehip seed oil is high in PUFAs and therefore prone to oxidation. Always incorporate antioxidants (0.1–0.5% Vitamin E tocopherol or rosemary CO2 extract) in finished formulations. Use the refined (RBD) grade when a neutral colour is required — it retains the full fatty acid profile while removing the orange pigment and characteristic aroma. Nitrogen-flushed packaging is available for maximum freshness on export shipments.

Fatty Acid Profile

Rosehip Seed Oil has an exceptional polyunsaturated fatty acid content — one of the highest of any commercially available carrier oil. The fatty acid profile is key to its cosmetic efficacy and formulation performance.

Linoleic Acid (C18:2)Omega-6 — PUFA
35–55%
Oleic Acid (C18:1)Omega-9 — MUFA
15–22%
Alpha-Linolenic (C18:3)Omega-3 — PUFA
16–25%
Palmitic Acid (C16:0)Saturated
3–6%
Stearic Acid (C18:0)Saturated
1–3%
Palmitoleic (C16:1)Omega-7 — MUFA
0.5–1%

Unsaponifiable Fraction & Actives

Beyond fatty acids, rosehip seed oil contains a significant unsaponifiable fraction with key cosmetic actives:

Beta-carotenePresent — responsible for orange-red colour; provitamin A activity
LycopenePresent — antioxidant carotenoid
Tocopherols (Vit E)Present — natural antioxidant, supports shelf life
PhytosterolsPresent — support skin barrier function
Trans-retinoic acid precursorsPresent in unrefined oil — support cell turnover
Carotenoids (total)Approx. 100–200 ppm in cold-pressed unrefined grade

Formulation Note

Rosehip seed oil is high in PUFAs and therefore prone to oxidation. Always add antioxidants (Vitamin E, rosemary extract) to formulations at 0.1–0.5%. Store finished products away from light and heat. Shelf life of finished products containing rosehip seed oil is typically 12–18 months with proper antioxidant inclusion.

Packaging Options

Rosehip Seed Oil is supplied in dark-glass or HDPE packaging to protect against oxidation. Nitrogen-flushed packaging available for premium unrefined grades.
