Technically a liquid wax ester, not an oil — jojoba is the closest plant substance to human sebum, offering unparalleled oxidative stability, universal skin compatibility, and a perfectly dry, non-comedogenic skin feel for all cosmetic applications.
Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is unique in the plant kingdom — its 'oil' is technically a liquid wax ester, not a triglyceride. This fundamental difference makes jojoba extraordinarily stable (effectively indefinite shelf life), perfectly non-comedogenic, and chemically similar to the sebum our skin naturally produces. These properties make jojoba the most universally compatible carrier oil available — suitable for all skin types including oily, acne-prone, sensitive, and mature skin.
SV Botanica supplies both golden cold-pressed jojoba (characteristic mild nutty aroma, full wax ester intact) and crystal-clear refined jojoba (colourless, odourless, for white or lightly coloured formulations). The refined grade is filtered through activated clay to remove colour and odour without chemical solvent treatment — maintaining the full wax ester composition.
Unique wax ester structure signals skin to moderate sebum overproduction — the only carrier oil suitable for oily and acne-prone skin formulations. Balances rather than strips.
Suitable for all skin types — dry, oily, sensitive, mature, acne-prone. The benchmark 'safe' base oil for sensitive skin and inclusive product formulations.
Reliably rated 0 on the comedogenic scale — the only carrier oil that does not block pores. Ideal in acne, blemish-prone, and congested skin formulations.
Wax ester structure resists oxidation indefinitely — no rancidity, no required antioxidants, 24+ month shelf life. Ideal for long shelf-life anhydrous formulations.
Unlike fatty acid-based triglyceride oils, jojoba's composition is dominated by long-chain wax esters — an unusual lipid class with unique skin-compatible properties:
| Gadoleic Acid (C20:1) | ~65% — primary wax ester component, sebum-mimicking |
| Erucic Acid (C22:1) | ~14% — long-chain wax ester component |
| Oleic Acid (C18:1) | ~12% — minor triglyceride component |
| Palmitic Acid (C16:0) | ~3% — minor saturated component |
| Tocopherols (Vit E) | Present — natural antioxidant support |
| Squalene | Trace — contributes to smooth skin feel |
| Docosenyl Eicosenoate | Primary wax ester — unique to jojoba; source of stability |
Jojoba's wax ester structure sets it apart from all other carrier oils — compare it to understand its unique position:
| Oil | Skin Compatibility | Skin Feel | Best Known For |
| Jojoba Oil ★ | All skin types | Dry, non-greasy | Wax ester — sebum-mimicking, sebum-regulating |
| Argan Oil | Normal–dry | Silky, light | Tocopherols, hair shine, stability |
| Rosehip Seed | Mature–dry | Dry, fast-absorb | Retinoids, carotenoids, scar reduction |
| Squalane | All skin types | Ultra-light, dry | Extreme stability, non-comedogenic |
| Sweet Almond | Normal–sensitive | Medium emollient | Gentle, affordable, massage base |
Jojoba's indefinite stability makes it the ideal base for any formulation requiring long shelf life. Unlike triglyceride oils, it does not go rancid and does not require antioxidants. Particularly effective for oily and acne-prone skin — its sebum-regulating properties are unique among carrier oils. Can be used at 100% as a standalone treatment oil for all skin types.
Jojoba is not a traditional fatty acid oil — it is a liquid wax ester. Its composition reflects wax ester components rather than a typical triglyceride profile:
Beyond the fatty acids, key cosmetic actives in the unsaponifiable fraction:
| Wax Esters | Primary composition — unique to jojoba; source of sebum-mimicking and stability |
| Tocopherols | Natural Vitamin E — antioxidant protection |
| Squalene | Trace — skin smoothing |
| Sterols | Plant sterols — anti-inflammatory |
| Myristic Acid | Trace — minor component |

Jojoba requires no antioxidant addition. For oily and acne skin: use at 50–100%. For hair: combine with argan for conditioning + shine. Clear refined grade is recommended for any formulation where colour neutrality is required. Hydrogenated jojoba wax is the solid form for balms and anhydrous cosmetics.
Rosehip Seed Oil is supplied in dark-glass or HDPE packaging to protect against oxidation. Nitrogen-flushed packaging available for premium unrefined grades.
10ml–100ml amber glass vials for evaluation and stability testing.
Amber HDPE or dark glass containers with tamper-evident caps.
Food/cosmetic grade HDPE drums with tamper-evident seals. Standard commercial pack.
Intermediate bulk containers for large commercial orders.
Store in cool (below 20°C), dark conditions away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep containers sealed — rosehip seed oil oxidises rapidly on exposure to air. Nitrogen blanket packing available on request to maximise shelf life. Recommended shelf life: 12–18 months from date of manufacture when stored correctly.
