Where Sourcing Meets Authenticity

The two issues connect on this ingredient more directly than most buyers realise.

Wild collection of Rubia happens in mixed vegetation where more than one madder-type plant may grow. A collector working by weight, digging red roots, is the mechanism by which the wrong species enters a supply chain — usually with no intent to deceive at all.

Add a trading chain in which lots are aggregated from many collectors, and species mixing becomes a structural property of the supply route rather than an occasional lapse.

Cultivated material removes most of this risk at source, because planted stock is of known species. Processing After Harvest

Root material needs care in the steps between digging and drying:

  1. Washing — roots come out of the ground with soil attached, and inadequate washing shows up directly as acid-insoluble ash;
  2. Sorting — aerial parts and stem separated from root and rhizome;
  3. Drying — controlled, to avoid mould development in a material with high initial moisture;
  4. Milling and extraction — at certified facilities, with species verification on the finished extract.

Step one is worth emphasising because it is the most common quality failure on root botanicals generally: a high acid-insoluble ash on manjistha is almost always a washing problem, not a plant property.
