What Is Manjistha?

Manjistha extract is prepared from the root and rhizome of Rubia cordifolia L. — Indian madder — a climbing perennial of the Rubiaceae family native to the Indian subcontinent.

In the Ayurvedic classical literature it is a varnya botanical, associated with complexion, and a raktashodhana or blood-purifying herb. Its modern commercial life is overwhelmingly in cosmetic and skin-care formulation, where that classical association translates directly into product positioning.

The Genus Problem

Rubia is the madder genus — historically the world's most important source of red dye, and a group of plants whose commercial character rests on a shared anthraquinone chemistry.

One member of that genus matters more than the others for a buyer:

Rubia tinctorum — European dyer's madder — was the subject of regulatory action in Europe on genotoxicity grounds associated with the anthraquinone lucidin. That history belongs to a different species from manjistha. But R. tinctorum is cheap, widely traded as a dye material, and once dried and milled into a red root powder it is not readily distinguishable from R. cordifolia by eye.

Which turns species substitution here from a commercial question into one with a safety dimension — and that is a different category of risk, warranting a different level of control.

Why Colour Cannot Help You

The instinct on a red root is to trust the red. It tells you nothing useful.

All the madders are red. That is what made the genus commercially important for centuries. A rich colour confirms you have a madder-type root — the thing you already assumed — and says nothing about which one.

What distinguishes species is the chromatographic fingerprint: the pattern of anthraquinones across the material. Munjistin, named for manjistha itself, is a particularly useful element of that comparison. The technical detail is in our guide to species verification in Rubia.

Ask for the Anthraquinone Profile

The second thing to require, and the one most manjistha certificates omit entirely: the anthraquinone profile, reported per batch by HPLC.

The reasoning is straightforward. Anthraquinones are the constituent class that gives this genus both its commercial character and its regulatory history. Leaving them undocumented means your regulatory review has nothing to work with, and it means you are relying on absence of information as though it were reassurance.

The Part: Root and Rhizome

Root and rhizome are the classical and commercial parts. Aerial stem and leaf differ in composition and anthraquinone content, and are cheaper.

Require a root-and-rhizome declaration with an acid-insoluble ash limit — root harvest brings soil, so that line is doing real work.

Plan for Staining

A practical point that catches formulators new to the ingredient: manjistha stains, and substantially. It is a madder; colour is what the genus does.

In rinse-off formats this is manageable. In leave-on products, colour carry-over onto skin, fabric and packaging has to be designed for rather than corrected afterwards.
