What Is Lion's Mane Extract?

Lion's mane extract is a concentrated preparation made from Hericium erinaceus, a tooth fungus of the family Hericiaceae named for the cascading white spines of its fruiting body. It is a mushroom, not a herb — there is no "plant part" here, no leaves or roots. The organism has two commercially relevant forms: the fruiting body (the mushroom itself, cultivated on hardwood-based substrate and harvested) and the mycelium (the root-like network the fungus grows as it colonises a substrate). Which one your extract is made from is the defining fact of the purchase.

The actives fall into two families. The fungal cell-wall beta-glucans — 1,3/1,6-linked polysaccharides — are the standardisation basis of a serious commercial extract. The hericenones (fruiting body) and erinacines (mycelium) are the terpenoid fractions most cited in the research literature on this species.

The Question That Defines the Purchase: Fruiting Body or Mycelium-on-Grain?

Here is the industry's open secret. Growing mycelium on sterilised grain is fast and cheap; growing fruiting bodies to harvest takes months. So a large share of "lion's mane" powder on the market is myceliated grain harvested and milled whole — the fungus and the substrate it grew on, which is mostly starch. Analyses of such products routinely find them dominated by alpha-glucan (starch) with a fraction of the beta-glucan content of genuine fruiting-body extract.

This is not automatically fraud — mycelium has its own research literature, and erinacines are genuinely mycelial compounds. The problem is disclosure: grain-grown biomass sold as "mushroom" at mushroom prices, behind numbers that hide the starch. The fix is analytical, not rhetorical:

The two-number test: ask for beta-glucans by enzymatic assay AND alpha-glucans by the same method. Genuine fruiting-body extract reads high beta (25–40%) and low alpha (under 5%). Mycelium-on-grain reads the reverse — often under 10% beta with alpha-glucan well above it, because the starch came along for the ride. No marketing claim survives this pair of numbers. Two lines deserve particular attention. The alpha-glucan limit is the line most CoAs in this category conspicuously lack, because it is the line that exposes grain.
