Formulating with licorice means doing one calculation before anything else: how much glycyrrhizin ends up in a daily serving. That number, not the therapeutic intent, decides which of the three grade families you are allowed to use — and it is the reason DGL exists as a commercial product at all. Everything else about licorice formulation follows from that arithmetic.
Do the Glycyrrhizin Arithmetic First
International scientific opinion has settled on roughly 100 mg of glycyrrhizin per day as a level below which adverse effects are not expected in most healthy adults. Above it, sustained intake is associated with pseudoaldosteronism — potassium loss, fluid retention, raised blood pressure.
Run the calculation before you design the format:

Read the last two rows together and the entire commercial logic of DGL becomes obvious. If your format needs a gram or more of licorice extract per day — as gastric-comfort chewables typically do — the standardised grade is arithmetically unavailable to you. DGL is not a lesser material; it is the only material that works at that dose.
Run the arithmetic on the assayed figure, not the grade name. A "20% grade" that assays at 24% delivers 20% more glycyrrhizin than your calculation assumed. For a marker with a ceiling, plan against the upper end of your specification range — the opposite of how you would overage a potency-driven active. This is the single most common licorice formulation error.
Gastric Comfort — the DGL Category
The largest single nutraceutical use, and effectively DGL's home. Typical formats are chewable tablets taken before meals, often with slippery elm, marshmallow root or zinc carnosine.
- Grade: DGL, glycyrrhizin NMT 2%. Specify a flavonoid minimum alongside it — see why a one-sided DGL specification can be met by dilution.
- Format: chewables dominate, because the traditional use pattern involves contact with the oral and oesophageal mucosa rather than swallowing a capsule.
- Watch: DGL is still sweet-adjacent but has lost the intense glycyrrhizin sweetness, so a chewable built on DGL needs its own sweetener system rather than relying on the extract.
Respiratory and Throat Formats
Licorice has long-standing use in throat and respiratory preparations across Ayurvedic, Chinese and European traditions, and here the standardised grade is usually correct.
- Grade: 10% or 20% standardised. Doses in lozenges and syrups are typically modest, so the ceiling is not binding.
- Format: lozenges, pastilles, syrups and herbal teas. The extract's water solubility and sweetness are both assets here.
- Pairing: commonly combined with tulsi, ginger and honey systems in traditional respiratory formats.
Confectionery and Food — Where the Labelling Threshold Bites
Licorice confectionery is a genuine food category with centuries of history, and the extract functions as flavour, colour contributor and sweetener simultaneously. It is also the application where regulatory attention is most concentrated.
- Grade: standardised, chosen so the finished-product glycyrrhizin lands where you want it relative to the advisory-labelling threshold in your market.
- Watch: the threshold is a property of your finished product, not of the ingredient. Whether you must carry an advisory statement is your calculation, and it needs the measured ingredient figure as its input. Get this from the CoA, not from the grade name.
- Functional bonus: at fifty times the sweetness of sucrose, glycyrrhizin does real work in sugar-reduction and bitterness-masking systems — including masking other botanicals in a blend.
Beverages and Herbal Teas
The standardised grade's water solubility makes it straightforward here, and its masking capability is often the actual reason it is in the formula.
- Grade: standardised, water-soluble.
- Use as a masking agent: licorice is one of the more effective natural tools for rounding off bitter botanical profiles — worth considering in any beverage carrying a bitter active, where it earns its place on sensory grounds alone.
- Watch: the labelling threshold applies to beverages as well as confectionery in several markets. A masking-level dose is usually well below it, but the calculation should still be done rather than assumed.
Cosmetic Formulation — the Glabridin Grade
A different material, a different formulation problem.
- Grade: glabridin NLT 40% by HPLC.
- Solubility is the trap: the glabridin fraction is hydrophobic. Oil- or glycol-soluble, not water-soluble. Formulators who have previously used a water-soluble licorice extract and switch to the cosmetic grade on the assumption it behaves similarly will find it does not disperse.
- Use level: glabridin is a value-dense active used at low percentages; the cost per kilogram is high but the cost per finished unit is usually modest.
- Watch: light and oxidation stability in a clear-pack format. Standard antioxidant and packaging precautions apply.
Traditional and Ayurvedic Formats
Classical yashtimadhu preparations and multi-herb churnas typically call for a native-ratio full-spectrum extract rather than a marker-standardised one, because the formulation logic is traditional proportion rather than defined active load.
- Grade: native ratio 4:1 or 10:1.
- Watch: a native-ratio extract still contains glycyrrhizin — at an undeclared level. If the finished product is going into a market with an intake ceiling or labelling threshold, you still need the glycyrrhizin figure, even though it is not the specification basis. Ask for it to be reported.
The Handling Issue: Hygroscopicity
The standardised grade is a water-soluble, saponin- and sugar-rich powder and it is markedly hygroscopic. In an uncontrolled warehouse it picks up atmospheric moisture and cakes. This is the most common practical complaint about the material, it is almost always a storage problem rather than a quality problem, and it is preventable:
- Keep containers tightly sealed; re-seal promptly after part-use.
- Do not leave opened drums standing in a humid production area between runs.
- Condition the material to room temperature before opening a cold drum, or condensation will do the damage for you.
- Caked material is usually still on specification — check the CoA and assay before rejecting it.
