Haritaki is Ayurveda's most revered fruit and, commercially, one of its most loosely specified extracts. The market quotes it on a UV tannin number that is trivially easy to inflate, under a trade name — myrobalan — that covers several species, from raw material that ranges from graded orchard fruit to ungraded forest collection. What Is Haritaki Extract?
Haritaki extract is a concentrated preparation made from the fruit of Terminalia chebula Retz., a large deciduous tree of the Combretaceae family found across India and South-East Asia. The dried fruit is the chebulic myrobalan — historically a global trade commodity, shipped for leather tanning and iron-gall inks, which tells you in commercial terms exactly what this fruit is: one of the most tannin-dense raw materials in the botanical trade.
In Ayurveda the fruit's standing could hardly be higher. The classical texts title haritaki the "King of Herbs" and place it first among the three fruits of Triphala, the most widely manufactured formulation in the Ayurvedic world. That heritage is a genuine commercial asset — and it is also why the buying side of this market is crowded with loosely documented material trading on the name.
Analytically, haritaki is defined by its hydrolysable tannins: chebulinic acid and chebulagic acid — chebulic-acid ellagitannins found in almost no other commercial botanical — plus corilagin, gallic acid and ellagic acid. The part used matters: the tannins sit in the fruit wall, the pericarp, and a proper specification says so, because the stone is low-tannin ballast.
How to Specify Grade: Four Commercial Families
- Tannin-standardised extract — assayed to a total tannin band of 30–45% by UV, or a fixed minimum (NLT 30% or NLT 40%). The mainstream supplement grade.
- Marker-profiled extract — the same material with chebulinic and chebulagic acid reported by HPLC per batch. The grade for regulated markets and any buyer who wants authenticity proven rather than asserted.
- Full-spectrum (native) extract — a native 4:1 / 10:1 ratio preserving the whole-fruit profile for traditional and Rasayana formats. Defined by extract ratio, not by a marker percentage.
- Certified organic grade — for organic-certified finished products, with the certification chain documented from collection through extraction.
These are different materials at different prices. A supplier quoting "haritaki extract, $X/kg" without naming the family and the assay basis is quoting nothing.
Buyer tip: the single most valuable line you can add to a haritaki specification costs the supplier almost nothing if their material is genuine: "chebulinic and chebulagic acid to be reported per batch by HPLC." A UV tannin figure can be met by cheap tannic acid; the chebulinic profile can only be met by real Terminalia chebula. The UV Number: Read It as a Band, Not a Boast
Total tannins by UV is the industry-standard assay for this material, and it has a known weakness: it reads all polyphenols, not just haritaki tannins. Real fruit varies by maturity, region and season, which is why an honest specification is a band — 30–45% — or a stated minimum. Treat a supplier quoting a single high, round number ("60% tannins!") with suspicion on two counts: genuine pericarp extract does not reliably sit there, and a UV method cannot prove what the number is made of. Three lines matter particularly on haritaki. The part-used declaration, because whole-fruit grinding with the stone included is the cheapest legal way to dilute the material. Aflatoxins, because dried fruit is collected, heaped and stored in warm, humid conditions before processing. And ethylene oxide, because dried fruit-derived botanicals are a recognised ETO risk category for EU import, where a positive finding means destruction of the consignment.
