Haritaki is specified almost universally on a UV tannin number, and commercial tannic acid β a refinery product of gall nuts β is one of the cheapest polyphenols on earth. Put those two facts side by side and you have described the central authenticity problem of this material. None of what follows is exotic; these are economically rational shortcuts that appear in real supply chains, and each one has a specific test that catches it.
Why Haritaki Is a Target
Botanical adulteration follows economics. It concentrates where the raw material has real cost, the extract is bought on a single number, and the buyer's testing is shallower than the seller's chemistry. Haritaki qualifies on all three counts β with an aggravating fourth: its assay of record, total tannins by UV, is the least specific assay in common commercial use. A UV total cannot distinguish haritaki tannins from any other phenol. Every route below exploits that in some form.
Route 1 β Tannic-Acid Spiking
The signature haritaki fraud. Commercial tannic acid is a purified gallotannin from oak or sumac galls, sold by the tonne for industrial use at a fraction of the cost of genuine extract. Blend it into a diluted or exhausted haritaki base and the UV assay climbs obligingly β 40%, 50%, whatever the buyer's specification asks for. The material passes the stated test while containing arbitrarily little Terminalia chebula.
What catches it: the HPLC profile, decisively. Tannic acid shows a gallotannin peak pattern with no chebulinic acid and no chebulagic acid β and those chebulic ellagitannins occur in essentially no other commercial material. A batch claiming 40% tannins with a flat chebulinic region is not haritaki, whatever the UV number says. Route 2 β Myrobalan Species Confusion
"Myrobalan" is a trade name, not a species. It historically covers Terminalia chebula (chebulic myrobalan, haritaki), Terminalia bellirica (belleric myrobalan, bibhitaki) and even the unrelated Phyllanthus emblica (emblic myrobalan, amla). All three are legitimate botanicals β together they are Triphala β but they are not interchangeable, and bibhitaki fruit is routinely cheaper. Mixed or substituted lots enter the chain both by error at village-level aggregation and by intent further up.
What catches it: TLC identity that must correspond to chebulinic and gallic acid reference, backed by the HPLC fingerprint β the chebulinic/chebulagic pair is present in T. chebula and effectively absent in T. bellirica. On raw fruit, macroscopic grading (the five-ribbed chebulic fruit is distinctive) plus a correct-species declaration on the CoA; DNA barcoding of incoming raw material can be arranged where a buyer needs a higher evidentiary standard.
Route 3 β Whole-Fruit Milling and the Stone
Haritaki's tannins live in the fruit wall β the pericarp. The stone inside is woody, heavy and tannin-poor. Extracting or milling the whole fruit, stone included, is the cheapest legal-looking dilution available: the label still truthfully says "Terminalia chebula fruit". The result is a weaker extract and, in powders, a gritty ash signature.
What catches it: a specification that says "pericarp; stone excluded" in writing, plus the assay itself β whole-fruit material struggles to reach a genuine 30% tannin figure β plus total ash and acid-insoluble ash limits that flag stony, mineral-heavy inputs.
Specification language that works: "Extract prepared from the fruit pericarp of Terminalia chebula Retz., stone excluded. Total tannins 30–45% w/w by UV on dry basis; chebulinic and chebulagic acid reported per batch by HPLC. Carriers and excipients, if any, declared by name and percentage on the Certificate of Analysis." Every route on this page now requires a falsified document rather than a quiet omission β a materially different decision for the seller.
Route 4 β Spent Marc and Undeclared Carriers
The generic botanical routes apply here too. Spent marc β the fruit residue left after extraction β still looks and smells right and can be dried, milled and blended back in. Maltodextrin, starch and dextrose make up weight in material sold as pure extract. Both dilute every active proportionally.
What catches it: the UV assay itself for crude dilution (the tannins simply are not there); loss on drying, bulk density and colour checks against a retained reference; a declared-carrier line on the CoA; and a dry, carrier-free specification basis that forces the arithmetic into the open. Note the interaction with Route 1: marc dilution is usually combined with tannic-acid spiking to restore the UV number β which is precisely why the HPLC profile, not the UV total, is the arbiter.
Route 5 β Ratio Mislabelling
A native 10:1 extract sold into a specification written for a tannin-standardised grade, on the logic that "10:1 sounds strong". A ratio declares manufacturing input, not polyphenol output, and a 10:1 haritaki can assay anywhere against a 30% minimum depending on the fruit that went in. Often sloppiness rather than fraud β and caught the same way: require an assay figure with a named method, and refuse a ratio as a substitute.

Practical Steps for a Buyer
- Make the HPLC profile mandatory. On haritaki it is not a refinement β it is the only line that defeats the dominant fraud.
- Specify pericarp, stone excluded. Free to write, expensive to fake.
- Require carriers declared by name and percentage. Converts an omission into a falsification.
- Set acid-insoluble ash at NMT 2%. The cheapest anti-bulking control there is.
- Third-party verify the first batch. Nominate Eurofins, SGS or Intertek for pre-shipment testing on a new supplier, chromatogram included.
- Re-qualify periodically. Wild-collected supply chains drift season to season more than orchard crops do.
