Most buyer's guides open with grades and assay percentages. This one cannot, because on giloy those come second. The first question is whether the material is actually Tinospora cordifolia — and that question has a safety dimension that most botanicals do not carry. Get the species right and giloy is a straightforward, well-documented ingredient. Skip it and no other control you apply is doing the job you think it is.
What Is Giloy?
Giloy extract is prepared from the mature stem of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thomson, a climbing shrub of the Menispermaceae family native to the Indian subcontinent.
In Sanskrit it is guduchi or amrita — "the nectar of immortality" — and it is among the most highly regarded rasayana botanicals in the Ayurvedic classical literature, used for immunity and convalescent support for well over two thousand years. Its international profile rose sharply as immunity-positioned supplements expanded worldwide.
The Species Problem
That rise exposed something the trade had largely overlooked.
Tinospora crispa is a close relative. It grows in overlapping regions of Asia. As a dried climbing stem it is visually similar. And it is not the Ayurvedic guduchi.
When reports of liver injury associated with giloy-containing products prompted scrutiny in India, species misidentification with T. crispa — for which hepatotoxicity concerns are documented — was among the explanations proposed by researchers and regulatory reviewers.
Reasonable people can weigh individual case reports differently. What is not really arguable is the procurement conclusion:
A giloy specification that does not verify species analytically is not controlling the principal risk this botanical carries. Not a quality risk — a safety one. This is why species verification belongs in the first line of your specification rather than as a documentation footnote. Why the Assay Cannot Help You
The instinct is to assume a bitter-principles specification would catch a wrong species. It will not.
Both Tinospora species are bitter climbing stems of the same family with broadly comparable bitter fractions. A bitter-principles figure is satisfied by either.
This is structurally identical to the species-blind glycyrrhizin assay on licorice: the standardisation marker and the identity question are separate, and your assay answers only one of them. On licorice that produces a commercial problem. On giloy it produces a safety one.
What distinguishes the species is the wider chromatographic fingerprint — the characteristic marker profile of T. cordifolia, including constituents such as tinosporide and tinocordiside, differs from that of T. crispa. Fingerprinting, not assay, is the control.
What to Require
- Species by binomial — Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thomson — on every batch certificate.
- HPLC fingerprint against authentic T. cordifolia reference material, with the result stated.
- T. crispa explicitly excluded — named in the specification, not merely implied by naming the wanted species.
- Verification on every batch, not at qualification only.
Point three is worth insisting on. "Species: T. cordifolia" is an assertion. "Fingerprint matches T. cordifolia reference; T. crispa not detected" is a test result. Ask for the second.
The Part: Mature Stem
The classical part is the mature stem. Leaf, root and immature growth differ in composition and are generally cheaper, and giloy is a climber harvested by cutting — so mixed material is the path of least resistance.
Require a mature-stem declaration, and pair it with an acid-insoluble ash limit, which catches woody immature material and soil carry-over.
Satva Is Not Extract
A distinction that causes real mispricing.

Satva is a genuine classical product with its own place. But a satva quoted against an extract specification represents a large shortfall in marker content — and helpfully, the colour difference makes it obvious on sight.
The Assay, and Its Method
Bitter principles are assayed by UV — a class method, with the protocol-dependence discussed for gymnema and fenugreek. State the method on the specification; percentages from different suppliers are not comparable unless it matches.
Request berberine by HPLC as a chromatographic anchor, and the tinosporide/tinocordiside marker profile where a fuller picture is wanted.

Labelling
Two considerations, both following from the above.
Given the hepatic issues that prompted scrutiny, finished-product formulators should consider advisory labelling — particularly for consumers with existing liver conditions or taking hepatically-metabolised medication. Requirements differ by jurisdiction and belong in your regulatory review.
Separately, immunity positioning is subject to strict claim rules in most regulated markets, and traditional-use framing generally travels better than physiological claims.
Our view is that these are best handled openly. A species-verified ingredient with sensible advisory labelling is a defensible product; an unverified one is a risk regardless of what the label says.
