Saraca asoca has been assessed as a threatened species. The part harvested is bark, from a slow-growing tree, and demand from the Ayurvedic sector has grown substantially. Those facts sit together, and the pressure on wild trees comes from the trade this product belongs to.

We would rather say that on a product page than let a buyer assume that cultural reverence has translated into effective protection. It has not, uniformly.

Why Ashoka Is Harder Than Arjuna

On arjuna we can honestly say that careful partial rotational debarking lets the tree survive and the bark regenerate. We cannot make the same claim for ashoka, and we are not going to imply it by using similar language.

What Follows for Sourcing

If wild harvest is hard to do sustainably at commercial scale, the answer has to come from cultivation:

The honest caveats: cultivated ashoka takes years to reach harvestable size, availability is finite, and it costs more than wild-collected bark. Those are real constraints, not reasons to abandon the position.

Conservation and Authenticity Are the Same Problem

This connection is the practical heart of the matter, and it explains the whole ingredient.

  1. Genuine ashoka is scarce, protected and expensive;
  2. A completely unrelated ornamental — Polyalthia longifolia — is called by the same name and is abundant and cheap;
  3. Scarcity plus a same-named cheap alternative produces substitution.

The conservation problem drives the adulteration problem. They are not two separate topics that happen to concern the same plant. Which is why our specification carries both a species confirmation line and a source line, and why a supplier addressing only one of them is addressing half the ingredient.

What Buyers Should Ask

  1. "Is this batch cultivated, plantation or wild-collected — and is it on the certificate?"
  2. "Can you trace it to a plantation or collection area?"
  3. "How is species confirmed on incoming bark?"

A supplier who answers the first with a general assurance about sustainability, rather than a per-batch declaration, has not answered it.

The Direction of Travel

Supply-chain diligence expectations on botanical raw materials are tightening, and threatened species attract the sharpest questions. For ashoka the answer is not to avoid the ingredient — it has genuine traditional use and a real market — but to move the supply base toward cultivation and to be transparent about where each batch came from.

That transition is paid for by buyers choosing declared cultivated material over cheaper undeclared bark. There is no other mechanism.
