What Is Ashoka?

Ashoka extract is prepared from the stem bark of Saraca asoca (Roxb.) Willd., a small evergreen tree of the Fabaceae native to the Indian subcontinent.

It is the classical Ayurvedic women's-health botanical, named in the traditional literature for gynaecological use, and it remains the backbone of a large category of Indian formulations. It also carries genuine cultural weight, associated with sacred groves and temple planting.

Problem One: The False Ashoka

Polyalthia longifolia — the mast tree, family Annonaceae — is planted in enormous numbers along Indian roads, in gardens and around institutions, and is commonly called "ashoka". It is not related to genuine ashoka. Its bark is the most frequently documented adulterant in this trade.

Why it happens is not mysterious. Look at the two supply pictures side by side:

A scarce, expensive, protected bark and an abundant, cheap one sharing a name is not a situation that resolves itself. The detail is in our guide to the false ashoka problem.

Problem Two: The Wrong Binomial

A great deal of ashoka documentation names the species "Saraca indica".

The correct name for the Ayurvedic ashoka is Saraca asoca (Roxb.) Willd. Saraca indica L. properly refers to a different species.

This has been repeated across trade documents for so long that it looks like the standard usage, and many suppliers using it are simply copying what they received. But on a certificate whose purpose is to identify a plant, the binomial is the identification — and a naming error carried forward for years is a reasonable prompt to ask what else on the document was copied rather than checked.

Why the Tannin Assay Catches Neither

Most ashoka specifications are written on tannins. Tannins are near-ubiquitous in tree bark.

Both S. asoca and P. longifolia are tannin-bearing barks. Both satisfy a tannin specification. The assay is measuring strength, not identity — a distinction that recurs across bark botanicals and bites hardest where a cheap look-alike exists.

What does work: the flavan-3-ol profile — principally (−)-epicatechin and catechin — read as a pattern by HPLC against authentic S. asoca reference material.

The Sourcing Question You Should Ask

Saraca asoca has been assessed as threatened, and the harvested part is bark from a slow-growing tree.

It is worth contrasting this with arjuna, where careful partial rotational debarking lets the tree survive and the bark regenerate. Ashoka bark harvest as commonly practised is considerably more damaging, and wild trees have been lost to it.

Claims: Plan Early

Ashoka's classical indication is gynaecological, and claims about menstrual or gynaecological conditions are disease claims in most regulated markets — outside supplement positioning and into medicinal territory. In the EU, health claims for botanicals in this area are effectively unavailable.

Traditional-use framing is the route that travels. Decide the positioning before formulating, not after.
