Aloe formulation begins with a question that has nothing to do with the format: will anyone swallow this? If yes, the aloin ceiling constrains which material you may use before any other decision is made. If no, the palette widens considerably and non-decolourised grades become legitimate. Everything else — dosing, solubility, handling — is comparatively straightforward.
The Divide That Comes First
| Ingestible | Topical only | |
|---|---|---|
| Required grade | Inner leaf or decolourised | Any, including non-decolourised |
| Aloin | Measured figure, NMT 10 ppm | Declared; limit relaxed |
| Regulatory driver | Hydroxyanthracene prohibition in supplements | Cosmetic safety assessment |
| Cost | Higher — decolourisation is a real step | Lower |
Settle this before you brief the formulation. A team that develops a beverage on non-decolourised material and discovers the aloin position late has to re-source, re-cost and often reformulate. The EU prohibits hydroxyanthracene derivatives in food supplements, and the industry standard for ingestible aloe is aloin NMT 10 ppm — see our standardisation guide.
Dose on Carrier-Free Polysaccharides
The second thing to fix, and the reason so many aloe products under-deliver.
A label saying "100 mg aloe vera 200:1" is a statement about powder and evaporation. It tells a formulator nothing about actives, because — as covered in the buyer's guide — the ratio describes drying a ~99% water gel, and the powder may carry substantial declared carrier.
Work instead from milligrams of polysaccharide per serving, calculated from the carrier-free assay on the batch CoA. That figure survives a supplier change; a ratio does not.
Functional Beverages — the Signature Format
Aloe drinks are a large global category and the format aloe suits best.
- Grade: decolourised or inner leaf, aloin NMT 10 ppm. Non-negotiable — this is ingested.
- Advantage: the gel powder is genuinely water-soluble, so no emulsification is needed.
- Watch — pH: aloe solutions run acidic (around pH 3.5–5.5), which usually suits a beverage system but interacts with your preservative choice and any pH-sensitive co-ingredients.
- Watch — mouthfeel: polysaccharides contribute viscosity and a characteristic slip. At functional doses this is noticeable; in an aloe-positioned drink it reads as authentic, in a clear water it may not.
- Watch — clarity: aloe can contribute slight haze. Fine in a "with aloe pieces" presentation, less so in a crystal-clear format.
Supplements
- Grade: decolourised or inner leaf.
- Format: capsules, tablets, softgels.
- Watch — dose feasibility: because aloe powder is diluted by carrier and the actives are a modest fraction, delivering a meaningful polysaccharide dose can require more powder than a capsule comfortably holds. Run the carrier-free arithmetic before fixing the serving size.
- Watch — claims: digestive positioning is constrained in most markets, and laxative-adjacent claims are tightly controlled — a particularly sensitive area for aloe given the anthraquinone association. Keep the framing conservative and the aloin documentation to hand.
Skin Care and Cosmetics
Aloe's largest and most forgiving application.
- Grade: cosmetic or inner leaf; non-decolourised is legitimate here, though most formulators prefer decolourised for colour reasons.
- INCI: Aloe barbadensis leaf extract is one of the most recognised cosmetic ingredients worldwide.
- Advantage: water-soluble, so it goes straight into the aqueous phase without emulsification — genuinely convenient in gels, toners, serums and creams.
- Watch — preservation: aloe is a polysaccharide-rich, water-soluble, nutritionally rich substrate. In an aqueous system it is food for microbes, and your preservative system needs to account for that. This is the most common technical failure in aloe cosmetic formulation.
- Pairing: commonly with gotu kola in soothing and repair positioning — a well-established combination.
Oral and Personal Care
- Grade: decolourised for anything that may be swallowed incidentally — toothpaste and mouthwash both qualify.
- Advantage: mild taste and good solubility suit rinse formats.
- Watch: the same preservation consideration applies in aqueous rinses.
Functional Foods
- Grade: decolourised, aloin NMT 10 ppm.
- Formats: gummies, yoghurt and dairy applications, fortified foods.
- Watch — thermal steps: polysaccharides are more robust than volatile or thermally labile markers, but prolonged heat and low pH together can degrade chain length. If your claim rests on polysaccharide content, assay the finished product rather than the raw material.
Handling: Hygroscopicity
The practical issue, and it is pronounced.
Aloe gel powder is a water-soluble polysaccharide powder, usually with a carrier — which makes it markedly hygroscopic. In an uncontrolled environment it picks up atmospheric moisture and cakes.
- Keep containers tightly sealed; re-seal promptly after part-use.
- Condition cold drums to room temperature before opening, or condensation does the damage.
- Caked material is usually still on specification — check the CoA before rejecting.
