Why the Spread Is So Wide

Most botanical markets have a quality spread constrained by the assay: dilute the material and the marker number falls, so the buyer sees it.

Aloe breaks that feedback loop in three places at once:

  1. The headline number cannot detect dilution. A concentration ratio describes evaporating a ~99% water gel, so a heavily diluted powder remains honestly describable as 200:1.
  2. The diluent is invisible. Maltodextrin is a white water-soluble powder; so is aloe gel powder.
  3. The diluent is legitimately expected. Spray-drying the gel requires a carrier, so its presence raises no flag by itself.

The market consequence: in a segment where dilution is undetectable by the number buyers quote, price competition selects directly for carrier content. That is not a moral observation about suppliers — it is what happens to any market whose headline metric is uncorrelated with the thing being bought. The correction is entirely on the buyer's side: specify carrier-free polysaccharides and the feedback loop is restored.

How Regulation Split the Ingestible Segment

The other structural force in this market.

Aloe's leaf latex carries aloin and related hydroxyanthracene derivatives — anthraquinone laxatives. The EU has prohibited hydroxyanthracene derivatives in food supplements, including preparations from Aloe species containing them, and the industry standard for ingestible aloe sets aloin at NMT 10 ppm.

The practical effect is that the cheap end of the market is structurally topical. Material made without decolourisation is genuinely cheaper to produce, and it has legitimate topical uses — the problem is only when it crosses into ingestibles.

Aloe is among the most recognised cosmetic ingredients in the world, with a recognised INCI listing and consumer familiarity that requires no education. Demand is broad, durable and comparatively insensitive to trend cycles — soothing, moisturising and after-sun positioning are permanent categories.

Aloe beverages — the distinctive segment

A large global category, particularly strong across Asia, with aloe drinks and aloe-pieces beverages a mature format. This segment pulls specifically on decolourised, ingestible-grade material and is therefore where the aloin question bites hardest at volume.

Digestive and daily-wellness supplements

Smaller than cosmetics, and constrained by claims: digestive positioning is limited in most markets and laxative-adjacent claims are tightly controlled — a particularly sensitive area for aloe given the anthraquinone association. Brands operating here compete on documentation quality rather than on claims.

Functional foods and clean label

A growing adjacent channel — gummies, dairy applications, fortified foods — benefiting from aloe's water solubility and mild taste.

Oral and personal care

Steady demand in toothpaste, mouthwash and sensitive-skin ranges, where decolourised material is appropriate given incidental ingestion.

European Union

The market that set the terms for ingestible aloe through the hydroxyanthracene position. For any EU-bound ingestible product, decolourised material with a measured aloin figure is the baseline. The general botanical import controls apply — pesticide MRLs, heavy metals, ethylene oxide.

United States

Large cosmetic and beverage demand under DSHEA for supplements. Industry certification standards for aloin in ingestible material are widely applied, and retailer and marketplace requirements often do the practical enforcing.

Asia-Pacific

The strongest region for aloe beverages, which are a mature mainstream category rather than a niche. Cosmetic demand is also substantial, particularly in soothing and post-sun positioning.

India's Position

India cultivates aloe at scale and has processing capability across filleting, decolourisation and spray drying, with the analytical infrastructure — NABL-accredited laboratories running HPLC — to measure aloin and polysaccharides as routine release parameters.

Given that aloe quality is a processing question rather than an agricultural one, the meaningful qualification is the one set out in our supplier guide: will they quote carrier-free polysaccharides, will they state an aloin figure, and can they describe their decolourisation step. Those capabilities vary considerably between processors drawing on the same abundant crop.

What This Means When You Buy

  1. Never compare quotations on concentration ratio. It is uncorrelated with what you are buying.
  2. Compare on carrier-free polysaccharides. The only basis that restores price-to-value.
  3. Treat a low price as a composition signal. In this market it very often is.
  4. Decide ingestible or topical first; it determines your entire cost base.
  5. Qualify the processor, not the origin. The value is added in the factory.
  6. Keep the aloin figure in your product file, not just in goods-in — it is the number a regulator or customer will ask about.
