What Is White Kidney Bean Extract?

White kidney bean extract is a concentrated preparation made from the seed of Phaseolus vulgaris L., the common bean, a member of the Fabaceae. The commercial material is water-extracted from white-seeded varieties, and its functional identity is a defensive seed glycoprotein: alpha-amylase inhibitor 1 (α-AI1), trivially named phaseolamin since its isolation in 1975. The inhibitor binds pancreatic alpha-amylase — the enzyme that cleaves dietary starch into absorbable sugars — which is the research-documented mechanism behind the entire carb-management category.

Note what that means commercially: this is a functional assay material. There is no gingerol or curcumin equivalent to assay by HPLC. The product is its activity, expressed in alpha-amylase inhibitory units per gram (U/g), and everything in a competent specification flows from that fact.

How to Specify Grade: Activity First

"White kidney bean extract" spans several genuinely different materials, and the most common sourcing error is treating them as one product at different prices:

Buyer tip: a 10:1 white kidney bean extract is not a stronger version of a 3,000 U/g extract — the two claims are not even in the same category. Because the active is a heat-sensitive protein, an aggressively processed high-ratio extract can carry less activity than a gently made 4:1. If your product depends on the mechanism, specify units per gram with the assay method named, and treat any ratio-only quotation as an unquantified material. The Lectin Line: The Question That Sorts Suppliers

Raw kidney bean contains phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) — the lectin that makes undercooked kidney beans unsafe to eat. A properly manufactured extract is processed with a controlled thermal step that deactivates PHA while preserving the amylase inhibitor, and a serious supplier proves it with a haemagglutination assay line on the CoA, reported as not detectable.

This line earns its place twice over. It is a real safety specification for a Phaseolus-derived ingredient. And it is a processing fingerprint: raw bean flour blended into extract to cut cost brings its lectin with it, so a clean PHA result is evidence the material was actually processed rather than diluted. Ask for the line by name. A supplier who has never been asked for a haemagglutination result is a supplier whose material has never been seriously audited.

Two lines deserve particular attention. Total protein is the identity and consistency anchor — but it is not a potency proxy, because denatured protein still assays as protein while carrying zero activity. And the activity method statement matters because inhibitory units are method-dependent: 3,000 U/g under one laboratory's assay conditions is not automatically comparable to 3,000 U/g under another's, so the CoA must say how the number was produced.
