White kidney bean extract has a property most adulterated botanicals lack: one of its main dilution routes is not just an economic fraud but a genuine safety issue. Raw bean flour is cheap, visually identical to extract — and carries active lectin. That gives this material an unusual testing story, because the same CoA line that proves processing also protects the consumer. Here are the routes that appear in real supply chains, and the specific test that catches each one.
Why White Kidney Bean Is a Target
Botanical adulteration follows economics. It concentrates where the raw material is cheap and abundant, the finished extract is bought on a single number, and the buyer's testing is shallower than the seller's ingenuity. White kidney bean scores heavily on all three: the bean is a food commodity costing a fraction of processed extract, the market buys on one activity figure, and — uniquely — that figure is a functional assay whose value depends on how it is measured, which opens a door that marker botanicals do not have.
The result is rarely a fake product. It is a real material that is weaker, rawer or thinner than the document says.
Route 1 — Raw Bean Flour Blending
Milled white bean flour looks and behaves exactly like extract in a bag. Blending it into genuine extract stretches volume at almost no cost, and because raw seed does contain some native inhibitor, a lightly cut lot may even limp past a lax activity check.
The catch — and it is a serious one — is that raw bean flour carries active phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), the lectin that controlled processing exists to destroy. A flour-cut extract is not merely weak; it reintroduces the hazard the manufacturing process removed.
What catches it: the haemagglutination assay. Genuine processed extract reads not detectable; flour-cut material does not. This single line is simultaneously the safety specification and the most efficient authenticity screen this material has, which is why it belongs on every batch CoA and not in a drawer marked "on request".
Route 2 — Undeclared Carriers and Bulking Agents
Maltodextrin, rice flour and starch are legitimate excipients when declared. The adulteration is the undeclared version — carrier making up weight in a product sold as straight extract. On this material there is an elegant twist: bulking with starch in an amylase-inhibitor extract is self-defeating chemistry, so the practical bulking agents are non-starch carriers, and they leave a signature.
What catches it: total protein by Kjeldahl. Every percent of carbohydrate carrier displaces protein, and a "40% protein minimum" line makes serious dilution arithmetically impossible to hide. Ash and acid-insoluble ash limits close the mineral-bulking door, and a specification clause requiring carriers declared by name and percentage converts an omission into a falsification — a materially different decision for a supplier.
Route 3 — Extract-Ratio Mislabelling
The commonest problem, and often sloppiness rather than fraud: a 10:1 or 20:1 concentrate sold into a specification that needed a defined activity, on the logic that a bigger ratio "must be stronger". What catches it: requiring an activity figure with a named method, and refusing to accept a ratio as a substitute for one.
Route 4 — Unit Inflation
The sophisticated end, and specific to functional-assay materials. Because an inhibitory unit is defined by the assay conditions, a seller can — without fabricating anything — choose an enzyme source, pH, incubation time or amylase unit definition that flatters the number. The same drum honestly reads 3,000 U/g under a conservative protocol and 8,000 U/g under a generous one. Nothing on the certificate is false; the comparison the buyer thinks they are making is.
Specification language that works: "α-Amylase inhibitory activity NLT 3,000 U/g by in-vitro enzymatic assay; assay protocol and unit definition to be disclosed and held constant across batches. Comparative qualification by side-by-side assay at a single buyer-nominated laboratory." That last sentence is the only true defence: send both candidates to one lab, one protocol, and let the materials speak under identical conditions.
What catches it: disclosed assay protocols, consistency of method across consecutive CoAs, and third-party side-by-side testing at qualification.
Route 5 — Species and Variety Substitution
Other beans and pulses — coloured P. vulgaris varieties, other legume flours — are cheaper in some seasons and visually indistinguishable once milled. Coloured-seed material also drags pigment and phenolics into a product specified as off-white.
What catches it: the seed-protein profile by SDS-PAGE, which is distinctive for Phaseolus vulgaris, plus organoleptic colour limits and a correct-species, seed-only declaration on the CoA.

- Ask for the PHA line by name. One request, two protections — safety and authenticity.
- Specify activity with a named, disclosed method. The unit means nothing without it.

- Require carriers declared by name and percentage. Cheap to ask, expensive to falsify.
- Third-party verify the first batch — Eurofins, SGS or Intertek, side by side with your incumbent material where you have one.
