Start With the Format Decision, Not the Dose

For most botanicals the first formulation question is dose. For wheatgrass it is format, because whole-grass powder, juice powder and 10:1 extract are different materials — different chlorophyll, protein and fibre levels, different solubility, different cost — and a formula designed around one cannot switch to another without redesign. Fix the format first, against the finished product's physical form; the inclusion level follows from label positioning and deck space.

Practical rule: if the finished product is a still liquid the consumer looks at — a shot, an RTD, a clear bottle — specify juice powder. If it is shaken, stirred, encapsulated or pressed, whole-grass powder is usually the economical right answer. Reserve the 10:1 extract for formats where every milligram of fill volume is contested. The full taxonomy is in our buyer's guide.

Daily-Greens Powders — the Core Category

The greens-blend category is wheatgrass's home ground, alongside spirulina, chlorella, moringa and barley grass. The format is a scooped or stick-packed powder consumed in water or a smoothie.

Wellness Shots, Juices and RTD

The juice-bar heritage format, and the least forgiving. Fresh wheatgrass shots built the ingredient's consumer identity; powdered formats now carry it into retail.

Capsules and Tablets

The convenience format for consumers who want greens without the ritual.

Gummies, Bars and Green Confectionery

A growing format as greens chase younger demographics — and the hardest one for this material.

Sports and Active Nutrition

Wheatgrass appears in recovery-greens stacks and plant-forward performance lines, usually as part of a broader greens complex rather than a hero active.

The Gluten-Free Label, Handled Properly

Most greens brands want the gluten-free claim, and wheatgrass is the one ingredient in the deck that makes auditors look twice. The position to build on: pre-jointing grass contains no gluten because no grain exists at harvest, but cross-contact with wheat kernels is a real pathway, so the claim rests on batch-wise ELISA results below 20 ppm — which is also what EU and US gluten-free labelling thresholds require. Specify ELISA per batch from your supplier, keep the reports with the batch record, and the ingredient that looks like the audit risk becomes the best-documented line in the file.

SV Botanica supplies all of these grades against buyer specification with a batch-specific CoA, chlorophyll declared by UV-Vis and gluten verified by ELISA. Tell us the finished format and we will confirm which grade fits and what to expect through your process — see the wheatgrass extract product page or the market and applications overview.
