Every serious botanical ingredient eventually earns a number — curcumin got 95%, piperine got 95%, gingerols got 5%. For turmeric's essential oil, the number is total turmerones, and the benchmark grade is 50% by GC. The Turmerone Trio
The volatile fraction of Curcuma longa rhizome is dominated by three closely related sesquiterpene ketones:
ar-Turmerone
The "ar" stands for aromatic — an aromatic ring distinguishes it from its siblings. It is typically the largest single peak in a genuine rhizome oil, the compound most cited in turmeric-oil research, and the de facto face of the material.
α-Turmerone and β-turmerone
The alicyclic pair — same carbon skeleton family, no aromatic ring; β-turmerone is also known as curlone. Together with ar-turmerone they form the assay basis: total turmerones = ar- + α- + β-.
Around the trio sits a supporting profile — zingiberene and related sesquiterpenes shared with ginger (the family resemblance of the Zingiberaceae), plus lighter monoterpenes such as α-phellandrene at the top of the aroma. The trio carries the identity; the supporting cast completes the fingerprint.
How the GC Assay Works
Gas chromatography vaporises the oil and separates its constituents along a capillary column; each compound elutes at a characteristic retention time and its peak area is quantified against a reference standard. The three turmerone peaks are individually resolved, individually quantified, and summed to the total. Because the turmerones are heavier, less volatile sesquiterpenes, they elute late and well separated from the monoterpene region — one reason GC suits this oil so cleanly.
Two consequences for buyers:
- The total has visible parts. A proper GC assay gives you ar-, α- and β- individually. Two oils can both read "50% total" with different internal ratios — and the natural ratio is itself an authenticity signal.
- Identity and assay come from the same run. The chromatogram that quantifies the turmerones also fingerprints the whole oil against the reference profile: one method, two guarantees.
Why "by GC" must appear on the CoA: without a stated method, a "turmerone %" could be estimated from density, colour or wishful thinking. The method clause is what makes the number auditable — the same logic that makes "curcuminoids by HPLC" the standard on the extract side.
Why 50% Is the Benchmark
Distilled rhizome oils vary with cultivar, rhizome age, freshness and distillation practice — native turmerone content spans a wide band. A 50% minimum defines a premium cut of that band: high enough that it cannot be met by tired raw material or careless distillation, achievable enough to be a repeatable commercial grade. It converts the oil from a variable natural product into a defined active input, which is what cosmetic and nutraceutical formulators actually need for batch-to-batch consistency.

Density deserves emphasis: it is the cheapest single screen for turmeric oil. The turmerones sit the genuine oil near 0.95; common cutting materials sit far lighter. A supplier's CoA showing 50% turmerones with a specific gravity of 0.87 is contradicting itself.
The Profile as Fingerprint
Beyond the total, the shape of a genuine rhizome-oil chromatogram is consistent: ar-turmerone leading, the α/β pair in natural proportion, zingiberene-family sesquiterpenes present, monoterpenes modest. Deviations tell stories — a monoterpene-heavy profile suggests leaf or off-species Curcuma material, a missing β-turmerone peak suggests reconstruction, an implausibly clean baseline suggests a blend built from isolates.
