Everything else in this range is one plant with one marker. Triphala is three plants whose ratio is the product — and the conventional standardisation basis, total tannins, is structurally unable to tell you what that ratio is. All three fruits are tannin-rich. That single fact reorganises how triphala has to be bought, and it is the reason a passing certificate can accompany a material that is not really triphala.
What Is Triphala?
Triphala — Sanskrit for "three fruits" — is the most widely used formulation in Ayurveda, documented across the classical texts and in continuous use for over two thousand years. It combines dried fruit of:
- Amla — Emblica officinalis Gaertn. (syn. Phyllanthus emblica)
- Bibhitaki — Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb.
- Haritaki — Terminalia chebula Retz.
in equal parts by weight. The classical rationale is that the three fruits address the three doshas between them. Whatever weight you give that framework, the practical consequence is firm: the ratio is the formulation. Change it and you have made something else.
The Structural Problem With Buying a Blend
Consider what a total tannin assay can and cannot tell you.
All three fruits are tannin-rich. Amla, bibhitaki and haritaki each contribute substantial hydrolysable tannins to the blend. So a "total tannins NLT 40%" specification can be satisfied by:

The assay passes in every row. This is not a subtle weakness in the method — it is a category error in using a single-marker approach on a multi-component product.
The line your specification needs: "Composition: amla : bibhitaki : haritaki, 1:1:1 by weight. Ratio to be verified by marker HPLC and reported on every batch Certificate of Analysis." Without that second sentence, the ratio is an assertion, not a specification — and it is the only part of the document that describes what triphala actually is. How Ratio Verification Actually Works
The fruits are distinguishable by their characteristic marker compounds, even though their total tannins are similar:
- Chebulagic and chebulinic acid — distinctive ellagitannins of Terminalia chebula, with a different profile in T. bellirica.
- Ellagic acid and corilagin — present across the blend at species-characteristic levels.
- Amla's tannin complex — its own signature, identifying the Emblica fraction.
Measuring these by HPLC and comparing their relative proportions reconstructs the blend composition. It is the difference between a supplier telling you the ratio and a supplier demonstrating it.
Extract Versus Churna — Not the Same Product
A frequent and expensive confusion.

Both are genuine products with proper uses. Quoting them against the same specification, or comparing their prices as though equivalent, produces a number that looks attractive for reasons that will not survive contact with your formulation.
Deseeded Fruit — a Real Control
Terminalia fruits have hard, heavy stones that are largely devoid of the markers. Including them adds weight and ash while diluting the actives.
Require a deseeded fruit pericarp only declaration, and pair it with an acid-insoluble ash limit — which is where stone fragments and associated grit show up and nowhere else.
The Labelling Point That Catches Formulators
Because triphala is a multi-species preparation, labelling requirements in most markets call for each species to be declared individually rather than under the collective trade name.
Practically:
- Your label will typically show amla, bibhitaki and haritaki each with its botanical name — not a single "triphala" line.
- Your allergen, novel-food and permitted-ingredient assessments should be run on all three species separately. A market that permits two of the three does not permit triphala.
- Your supplier documentation needs all three binomials, which is why we put them on every certificate.
Formulators who treat triphala as a single ingredient discover this during a regulatory review, which is a poor time to discover it.
The Vitamin C Question
Amla is famous as a vitamin C source, and that reputation attaches itself to triphala. Be careful with it.
Vitamin C is heat-labile and readily oxidised. Extraction and drying reduce it, to a degree depending on process conditions. So a triphala extract should not be assumed to carry raw-fruit vitamin C levels.
If a vitamin C content claim matters to your product, have it measured on the specific batch rather than inferred from amla's reputation. The extract's antioxidant character comes substantially from its tannin and polyphenol fraction regardless.

Note that the tannin assay is a UV class method, with the same cross-supplier comparability limits discussed elsewhere. State the method — but recognise that on triphala it is the ratio line, not the tannin line, that carries the important information.
Custom Ratios Are Legitimate — If Specified
Some proprietary formulations deliberately depart from 1:1:1 — weighting toward haritaki, for instance. That is a formulation choice, not an adulteration.
The distinction is whether the ratio was chosen and verified or arrived at by accident. Specify whatever ratio you want and require verification against your declared composition. The control is the same; only the target changes.
