Triphala has an adulteration route that no single-botanical extract has, and it is unusually elegant: change the proportions of the three fruits toward whichever is cheapest, and the total tannin assay passes perfectly. Nothing is added, nothing is diluted, no foreign material appears. The certificate is entirely truthful about everything it measures. It just does not measure the thing that makes triphala triphala.
The Adulteration Unique to Blends
Every other authenticity guide in this series covers routes where something is added or substituted — rutin into ginkgo, citric acid into garcinia, peanut skin into grape seed. Detection is a matter of finding the foreign thing.
Triphala is different. The most important route adds nothing and substitutes nothing. It simply changes the proportions.
Because the three fruits differ in cost and seasonal availability, a producer under margin pressure can weight the blend toward whichever is cheapest. The material remains entirely triphala-derived. Every ingredient is authentic. And because all three fruits are tannin-rich, as covered in our ratio verification guide, the total tannin assay passes without difficulty.
Why this is genuinely hard to catch: there is no foreign compound to find, no contaminant, no diluent. A conventional botanical authenticity programme — identity testing, marker assay, contaminant panel — returns a clean result on a material that is not the formulation you ordered. Only a test designed to measure composition rather than concentration will see it.
Route 1 — Fruit Ratio Manipulation
The defining risk. Weight the blend toward the cheapest or most available fruit; leave everything else genuine.
What catches it: marker HPLC ratio verification, and essentially nothing else.
The fruits carry distinguishable tannin profiles despite similar totals. Chebulagic and chebulinic acid are characteristic of Terminalia chebula with a different profile in T. bellirica; amla carries its own signature. Measuring the relative proportions of these markers reconstructs the actual composition and compares it against the declared ratio.
What does not catch it: total tannins, gallic acid (common to all three), identity testing, or any contaminant panel. Worth stating explicitly, because buyers frequently believe a full standard test package covers this. It does not.
Route 2 — Species Substitution Within Terminalia
A subtler variant. The genus Terminalia contains many species, and several produce superficially similar fruit. Substituting a related Terminalia for bellirica or chebula yields material that looks right and contributes tannins.
What catches it: the same marker profile work, since chebulagic and chebulinic acid levels are species-characteristic. Plus TLC identity on each incoming fruit before blending — which is the more reliable control, because verifying species is far easier on a single fruit than on a finished three-component blend.
This is a genuine argument for buying from a manufacturer who blends from identified fruit rather than a trader who buys pre-blended material.
Route 3 — Seed and Stone Inclusion
Terminalia fruits have hard, heavy stones, largely devoid of the markers. Removing them costs money; including them adds weight.
What catches it: a deseeded fruit pericarp only declaration, and the acid-insoluble ash figure, where stone fragments and grit appear. A blend meeting its tannin specification with elevated acid-insoluble ash is carrying material that is not fruit flesh.
Route 4 — Churna Sold as Extract
Not always deliberate, and often a specification failure rather than fraud. Triphala churna — the milled fruit powder — is a legitimate classical product with a much lower marker concentration than a standardised extract.
Supplied against an extract specification, or priced comparably, it represents a several-fold shortfall in delivered actives.
What catches it: the total tannin assay, which does its job well here — churna cannot approach a 40% tannin figure. This is the one route where the tannin number is the decisive control.
Route 5 — Undeclared Carriers and Spent Fruit
The familiar routes. Maltodextrin or starch bulking; extraction residue blended back.
What catches it: total tannins for gross dilution, total and acid-insoluble ash for mineral bulking, a declared-carrier line by name and percentage, and assay on a dry, carrier-free basis.
A useful tell on triphala: the blend is strongly astringent and sour — a tannin-rich material with a distinctive mouthfeel. Material that tastes flat for its stated tannin content is worth a chromatogram.

Note the asymmetry: the top row catches the route that nothing else catches, and the fifth row catches a route the top row is not designed for. Both are necessary; neither substitutes for the other.
Distinguishing Deviation From Variation
An honest complication. Marker levels vary with harvest, region and season, so a small deviation from the predicted profile is expected and does not indicate manipulation.
Two things separate them:
- Magnitude and coherence. Seasonal variation moves markers modestly and somewhat independently. A ratio shift moves one fruit's entire marker set together, substantially.
- Persistence across batches. Natural variation scatters around the expected profile. Systematic under-weighting produces a consistent directional bias.
This is why three consecutive batch profiles are worth more than any single certificate on this ingredient — the pattern is the evidence.
Practical Steps for a Buyer
- Require ratio verification by marker HPLC on every batch. Without it, your composition is an assertion. This is the single highest-value requirement on triphala.
- Ask for three consecutive batch marker profiles. The pattern distinguishes systematic deviation from seasonal variation.
- Prefer a manufacturer who identifies each fruit before blending over a trader selling pre-blended material.
- Require the deseeded declaration and an acid-insoluble ash limit.
- Confirm extract versus churna unambiguously in the purchase document.
- Third-party verify with ratio markers in scope. An independent tannin figure reproduces the exact blind spot — this is the most common and most expensive mistake in triphala verification.
- Re-verify when fruit prices move. If one of the three fruits has a poor season, the incentive to re-weight the blend rises with its price.
