The core problem: most of these tricks can pass a superficial check. A product can look right, smell roughly right, and even hit a colour figure — while being substantially not saffron. Only a profile-based analytical method reliably exposes them.

How Authenticity Is Actually Proven

The single most powerful check is HPLC identity profiling. Rather than measuring one number, it compares the batch's full chromatographic fingerprint against genuine reference material. To pass, the profile must comply with the reference across all major peaks. Marker spiking that boosts one compound tends to distort the ratios between peaks, which a profile comparison catches.
