What Is Maca?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii Walp.) is a member of the Brassicaceae — the cabbage, broccoli and mustard family — cultivated on the Peruvian high Andean plateau above four thousand metres, where few crops survive. Hold on to that family placement; it becomes important.

The part used is the hypocotyl, a swollen stem-root structure, universally traded as "maca root". It has been grown and eaten in the Andes for centuries as a genuine food crop rather than only a medicinal botanical.

Variable One: Colour Phenotype

Maca grows as yellow, red and black hypocotyls — colour phenotypes of the same species, often in the same field.

Two things follow. First, an unspecified "maca extract" will normally be yellow — the most abundant and least expensive. If your formulation calls for red or black, the specification must say so or you will receive yellow at yellow quality and possibly red pricing.

Second, treat the positioning column as market convention rather than established fact. The associations are real in the trade and widely used in marketing, but a buyer intending to make a specific claim should check the evidence base for that claim rather than inheriting the convention.

Variable Two: Raw or Gelatinised

Gelatinised macamaca gelatinizada — has been treated with heat and pressure to remove much of its starch, improving digestibility and dispersion.

Variable Three: Origin

Maca is Andean. Peru maintains protections around maca germplasm and raw material, reflecting its status as a native crop of national importance, and "Peruvian maca" is a meaningful provenance statement that carries a genuine premium.

Which means, predictably, that origin claims on maca attract scrutiny — and that a supplier should be able to document origin rather than assert it.

Ask two questions: "What origin is declared on the batch certificate?" and "Are you the origin producer, or a merchant/exporter?" Both answers are legitimate — plenty of good maca moves through merchants — but a supplier who is vague about which they are is being vague about something they know. A clear answer is a positive signal.

The Marker Problem: Glucosinolates Cannot Identify Maca

Here is where the Brassicaceae point returns.

Maca is conventionally standardised on glucosinolates, typically NLT 0.6%. But glucosinolates occur throughout the cabbage family — broccoli, cabbage, mustard, horseradish, and every other Brassicaceae.

So a glucosinolate figure tells you something about concentration and nothing about whether the material is maca. It is satisfied by a great many plant materials, several of which are dramatically cheaper.

This is the same structural gap we describe on licorice and giloy — the standardisation marker and the identity question are separate. On maca it is unusually stark, because the conventional marker is shared with common supermarket vegetables.

The Fix: Macamides

Macamides are benzylated fatty acid amides essentially unique to Lepidium meyenii. Alongside them sit macaenes, characteristic unsaturated fatty acids.

Their presence at expected levels is positive evidence that the material is maca — which no glucosinolate figure can provide.

Require: "Macamides to be reported by HPLC on every batch Certificate of Analysis." This is the single highest-value line on a maca specification, and it does the job the conventional marker cannot.

Note that colour should be read against the declared phenotype rather than a single expectation — yellow is cream to light beige, red is pale pink-beige, black is grey-beige to light brown.
